Copley Place
Robert B. Parker's WonderlandCopley Place is the setting for a tense pursuit in which Jemma Fraser, afraid to leave the mall as it closes, seeks Spenser’s help. Its shops and restaurant turn a familiar commercial interior into a temporary refuge—and the route Spenser must cross alone to reach her.
Setting and Layout
Copley Place is presented through its retail passageways and the Legal restaurant at Copley Place. Spenser walks past J.Crew, Kenneth Cole, Calvin Klein, and Armani Exchange before reaching the restaurant, which has a bar and a far-left corner near the kitchen. The specific landmarks give the encounter a practical geography: Jemma is inside the mall, and Spenser must find her there.
The Pursuit
Jemma tells Spenser she is at Copley Place and has no idea who is following her. The man has been behind her for an hour; with the mall closing, she is afraid to leave. When she later says she is on the second level, she reports that there are now two men. Her fear is sharpened by Rick Weinberg’s death: she does not want to end up like him. The mall is not described as inherently dangerous; the threat lies in Jemma’s uncertainty about who is pursuing her and what will happen when she exits.
A Route to Safety
Spenser first suggests that Jemma speak to a security guard. When she continues to plead for help, he directs her to the Legal restaurant at Copley Place, reasoning that it stays open late and that no one will make a move there. The call then goes dead. Spenser enters the mall alone, armed and wearing his best sport coat, while the narration notes the absence of visible ruffians or suspicious sounds. He hears a Muzak version of April in Paris as he passes the shops, an ordinary retail soundtrack set against his alert search. At the restaurant, he finds Jemma seated near the kitchen; a gray-haired man in a black suit and loosely buttoned black shirt is leaning over her with a sharp leer, and a bartender has placed a martini in front of her. Copley Place thus serves both as the site of the pursuit and as the route to a public meeting place where Spenser can reach Jemma.
