Full Moon Separation Rule

SCOTTISH ROMANCE: My Sinful Surrender to a Highlander Werewolf (Scottish Werewolf Pregnancy Romance) (Historical Medieval Shape Shifter Paranormal Science Fiction Short Stories)

The Full Moon Separation Rule governs the dangerous boundary between Malleus’s human relationship with Abigail and his uncontrollable werebear transformation. It is not presented as a casual custom but as a survival measure: Malleus believes that Abigail can remain under his protection only if she is absent whenever the full moon triggers the change.

Definition and Conditions

The rule requires Abigail to leave Malleus before the transformation begins and to stay away until the danger has passed. Malleus insists that she must depart days in advance, before he can smell or hear her, because ordinary physical proximity may become a threat once his werebear nature takes control. The separation therefore includes both a period of anticipation and the transformation itself; returning immediately after the change is not treated as safe or acceptable.

Malleus’s Fear of Harm

Malleus establishes the rule because he cannot control his power or retain consciousness when he turns. He admits that his greatest fear is becoming like the person he associates with monstrous violence, and he says he would never forgive himself for hurting an innocent person. His anxiety is consequently ethical as well as physical: the danger is not merely that Abigail might be frightened, but that Malleus might lose responsibility for his actions and injure someone he is trying to protect.

The rule also reflects Malleus’s uncertainty about his own identity. He has already described himself as a lone monster who refused to depend on the life offered by another man, yet he wants Abigail to survive and remain protected. His insistence on separation is an attempt to prevent the animal side of his existence from defining his relationship with her. In that sense, the full moon exposes the limit of his self-knowledge: he can promise protection only by acknowledging that, at the crucial moment, he cannot trust himself.

Negotiation with Abigail

Abigail does not respond to the rule with simple submission. She makes light of the arrangement by asking whether she should return after Malleus finishes his werebear “PMSing,” turning the frightening transformation into a teasing domestic inconvenience. Malleus rejects the joke and tells her that he is serious, emphasizing that playing with fate will have consequences.

When Abigail asks why she should not trust him, Malleus’s answer is categorical. He cannot ask her to rely on his judgment during a state in which consciousness disappears, so he asks her to accept the separation as the price of protection. Abigail finally agrees, partly because she recognizes that she needs Malleus in order to survive. Her acceptance makes the rule a negotiated condition of their shared life rather than a purely imposed command, although the imbalance remains clear: Malleus defines the danger, sets the timetable, and determines the distance required.

Consequences and Significance

The rule transforms the full moon into a recurring interruption of intimacy. Abigail and Malleus may live within the same protective arrangement, but their relationship must repeatedly be suspended before the lunar trigger arrives. The calendar becomes a warning system, and the home they are trying to create contains a scheduled absence built into its foundations.

At the same time, the rule gives Malleus a form of responsibility when control is impossible. He does not claim that love or trust will neutralize the werebear; instead, he treats physical separation as the only reliable safeguard. Abigail’s faith in him cannot replace precautions, and Malleus’s desire to protect her cannot erase the risk posed by his transformation. The rule therefore crystallizes one of the relationship’s central tensions: closeness offers survival and emotional shelter, while closeness during the full moon may produce the very harm from which Malleus is trying to save her.
