Grébiche Names the Stone

Grébiche Names the Stone
A warning in the village
After the cemetery landslide reveals the jewel, Grébiche calls it the Devil’s stone and demands that the dead be reburied. The villagers already associate the storm, strange tracks, and animal deaths with a supernatural disturbance.
A family absorbs the omen
The D’Anjous dismiss or fear the warning in different ways, but the phrase enters their shared memory. The cameo becomes both a possible key to ancestry and an object blamed for future calamities.
Loss Accumulates

Loss Accumulates
A lineage under pressure
The family has already lost Élias D’Anjou in the Dieppe Raid and suffered other deaths before Loïc’s difficult birth. The newly surfaced cameo gives these events a possible pattern in the minds of the survivors.
Misfortune becomes a story
Maurice Bolduc dies young, and Alcide Bolduc vanishes on a northern flight. The family curse becomes a narrative through which grief, chance, and unanswered questions are made to seem connected.
A Curse Across Generations

A Curse Across Generations
The warning returns
Grébiche dies in a violent house fire on September 11, 1959, after cursing Romuald Bolduc and his descendants. The date later resonates with Roger Bolduc’s disappearance in the attacks of 2001.
Coincidence gathers force
Loïc increasingly reads deaths, betrayals, and accidents through the cameo’s supposed influence. The family’s belief becomes part of the mystery even when no supernatural cause can be verified.
The Stone at the Center

The Stone at the Center
Competing explanations
Loïc considers the cameo a possible carrier of malevolent energies, while others see a stolen treasure or a family symbol inflated by fear. The narrative repeatedly leaves room for both psychological and supernatural readings.
The curse gains witnesses
The jewel’s passage through New York and Cuba brings new deaths and frightening episodes. Each new account strengthens the curse story, though the chain of human choices remains visible beneath it.
Fire at Barzac

Fire at Barzac
Twins reunited
Charles de Castelmont finally displays the two cameos together at Château de Barzac. The reunion seems to close a centuries-long pursuit and settle his family’s claim to the missing twin.
Destruction follows triumph
A tremendous fire destroys the castle and kills Charles and other guests. Loïc wonders whether the paired stones, charged by generations of hatred, have produced one last catastrophe, but the cause remains uncertain.
