Acharya Returns to Work at the Institute

Serious Men

Acharya Returns to Work at the Institute is presented not as a triumphant public reinstatement but through the intimate work of rebuilding his office after the Institute riot. Over two weeks, Lavanya supervises its restoration; the repaired room becomes the setting for a small domestic negotiation that registers both Acharya’s return and the relationships sustaining it.

The Office After the Riot

Order had taken three hours to restore at the Institute. Police carried away rioters, one car burned in the driveway, other cars had broken windscreens, and windows hung from the main block. Against that wreckage, the office’s later reconstruction is a practical sign that work is resuming. The novel gives no formal account of Acharya’s status or of an institutional ceremony: his return is instead made visible in the room being put back together.

Lavanya has supervised this work for the last two weeks. When she surveys the finished space, its textured walls still seem too empty to her. The room is therefore restored physically but not yet settled as a shared domestic environment: she wants to furnish it, while Acharya insists on leaving it bare.

A Dispute Over the Walls

The lone permitted adornment is a framed poster of Carl Sagan. Lavanya notices that it survived when the rest of the office was broken and asks whether Acharya will allow at least one painting, reminding him that he had begged her to come back. Her appeal joins the office’s repair to the repair of their relationship: her presence is not incidental to his return, and his request for her return is part of the scene’s stated history.

Acharya refuses the additional decoration. He says he likes the walls blank and looks out to sea through the new window. The contrast is deliberate: the new window marks a material change to the reconstructed office, while the blank walls preserve the spare arrangement he prefers. Lavanya gives up the argument because she is tired, not because the difference has been resolved. Their exchange leaves her wish for a more personal room beside his insistence on emptiness, without turning the disagreement into a larger confrontation.

Lavanya and Ayyan

As Lavanya leaves, she smiles at Ayyan, who is half standing, and tells him in Tamil to take care of Acharya. Ayyan touches his chest with his fingertips and assures her that he always will. The gesture gives his answer a physical emphasis, and the exchange places him within the circle of care around Acharya: he is not merely present in the restored office but is entrusted with looking after its returning director.

The scene closes on these gestures rather than on a public declaration of recovery. Lavanya’s exhausted concession, her smile to Ayyan, and his pledge make the return legible as a fragile, practical rebuilding—of a damaged workplace and of the personal ties that have brought her back. The office remains spare, and the text does not claim that every rupture has been settled; what it shows is that Acharya is again at work with Lavanya’s presence and Ayyan’s loyalty close at hand.
