Bhabha Atomic Research Centre
Serious MenBhabha Atomic Research Centre is the concealed destination of the Institute’s Joint Entrance Test papers. In the novel, its importance to Ayyan Mani’s scheme comes from the contrast between an elaborate system for protecting the exam and the limits of what a clerk can reach: the papers are not in the Institute at all, but in a secured room at the Centre.
The Exam Papers’ Secure Destination
The Centre enters the plot when Ayyan tries to locate the Joint Entrance Test papers. The exam’s questions are prepared each year by five professors and the Director over three weeks, written by hand in a single notebook, and sent in three versions to separate printers. Ayyan learns that the printed papers have already been delivered and searches locked rooms at the Institute, but finds nothing. The assumption that the cartons must be somewhere on the premises proves wrong.
Acharya then tells Ayyan that the papers are never stored at the Institute. Instead, they are kept in a sealed, secured room at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. The Centre’s security is presented from Ayyan’s practical point of view: it is a fortress beyond the methods available to a clerk. The obstacle is not merely finding a locked door; it is that the papers have been placed beyond the reach of the access and informal knowledge on which Ayyan has relied.
A Barrier in Ayyan’s Plan
Ayyan’s search is part of his attempt to help his son, Adi, in a future shaped by competitive entrance examinations. The prospect of those exams looms over Adi’s life: Ayyan imagines him competing against thousands of boys for a place in engineering education, with poverty narrowing his options. The question papers therefore stand for more than a protected institutional document; they are the object Ayyan believes he needs to bend the competition in his son’s favour.
The Centre closes off that route. After Acharya explains where the papers are kept, Ayyan asks what they can do. Acharya replies by pointing to his head, suggesting that access to the physical papers is unnecessary because he knows their contents. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre thus marks the point where Ayyan’s search for a material shortcut gives way to Acharya’s knowledge. The location’s brief appearance makes the exam’s security system tangible while exposing the limits of Ayyan’s plan.
