Mensa

Serious Men

Mensa is an intelligence society that becomes a credential in Ayyan Mani’s contest with the scientists at the Institute. His claim to have joined at eighteen turns an exchange about intelligence and social privilege into a moment that unsettles the institute’s hierarchy—and is later confirmed by Professor Jal.

Ayyan’s Membership

During a tense exchange with Jana Nambodri, Ayyan claims that his IQ is 148. Nambodri responds by asking whether there was a reservation for Dalits, prompting laughter from the astronomers. Ayyan then says that he joined Mensa when he was eighteen. In the scene, membership is presented not as a technical description of the organization but as Ayyan’s assertion of a distinction that his colleagues might otherwise dismiss.

Confirmation and Status

The claim is not left as Ayyan’s boast. Later, Professor Jal reflects that Ayyan really did get into Mensa. That confirmation distinguishes the membership from the other claims and performances through which Ayyan challenges the scientists: despite the group’s laughter and Nambodri’s sarcasm, this credential is genuine.

Narrative Significance

Mensa’s brief appearance links intelligence to institutional status and social exclusion. Ayyan uses his membership to answer a challenge from a senior scientist, while Nambodri’s question about Dalit reservation turns the exchange toward caste. The later confirmation gives Ayyan’s claim an ironic force: a clerk whom the scientists treat dismissively possesses a recognized distinction that they cannot simply laugh away.
