Monsoon season

Serious Men

The monsoon season is more than a backdrop in Arvind Acharya’s story: its sudden downpour and repeated rains accompany changes in how he sees his marriage, his attachment to Oparna Goshmaulik, and his work on the Balloon Mission. A storm on Marine Drive offers a sequence of public scenes before returning him to Lavanya Acharya; later, rain gathers around a private crisis and falls again on his journey home. The season’s alternation of downpour and clearing gives the narrative a recurring measure of interruption and return.

Arrival on Marine Drive

While troubled by his growing fixation on Oparna, Acharya leaves the Institute and walks through Navy Nagar to Marine Drive. From the promenade he watches the weather approach across the sea. The evening traffic seems to be fleeing a warning; wind sends dust, leaves, old newspapers, and a blue kerchief along the road. The monsoon begins as drizzle, prompting walkers to abandon their exercise and hurry for shelter. Acharya’s attention settles on the old women opening umbrellas, which strike him as a technology already complete, with no further evolution needed.

The rain soon becomes a torrent, hiding buildings across the bay. People respond according to age and circumstance: some hurry to cover, while young people who have come to experience the rain stay out in it, laughing, skipping, and raising their faces. Some make theatrical gestures as they stand; young women worry that their blouses may have become transparent. The scene shifts between spontaneous delight and self-consciousness, while the weather temporarily changes the ordinary business of the promenade into a public spectacle.

The downpour passes, and the clouds clear. Acharya thinks his vision has improved as a new light falls over Marine Drive. Walkers return to the wet tiles, including elderly couples moving carefully beneath umbrellas bent by the breeze. Their caution registers the danger of a fall at their age, while their paired hands and remembered earlier monsoons place the present rain against years of change. The scene’s movement from approaching storm to cleared sky is also a movement in Acharya’s attention: he has watched strangers through the rain, but carries the evening’s altered perspective home with him.

Rain and the marriage he returns to

Acharya arrives home soaked, and Lavanya responds with a joke comparing him to Archimedes before drying him with a towel. The domestic encounter follows his long walk through a scene of changing weather and brings him face to face with his wife’s age and frailty. He notices the lines on her neck and asks himself what a man must do. The question is left unresolved, but its placement makes the return from the storm a moment of private reckoning rather than a simple end to an outing.

Rain later accompanies a more acute conflict. Three hours before the meeting with Oparna that he has arranged in the basement, Acharya tries to distract himself with a question about whether time flows continuously or in jumps. He is drawn toward Oparna, yet feels grief at the prospect of enjoying an affair without sharing the pleasure with Lavanya. The sorrow, as he understands it, is not simply remorse: he imagines his wife as lost to him even while she remains alive. Outside, the air has become still; when he opens the window, he hears the violent sea and senses that heavy rain is coming. The weather gathers at the threshold of the encounter, alongside his awareness of fidelity and the life he has built with Lavanya.

The season around the Balloon Mission

Acharya’s personal turmoil does not remove him from the Balloon Mission. His attraction to Oparna becomes entangled with her central role in the project: he believes that a serious setback would disappoint her and embarrass him. He therefore resolves to keep the balloon launch and recovery, and the analysis of the air sampler, on course. His effort is driven at once by professional commitment, fear of losing Oparna, and exhaustion; the evidence places this renewed labor during a period of insomnia and emotional strain, not as a simple consequence of the weather.

Eight days after Lavanya leaves to mourn her sister, something in Acharya gives way. This interval places his crisis within a changed household routine, while his work on the mission continues to press on him. The monsoon is not identified as the cause of his decision to seek Oparna, but rain recurs around the story’s charged moments and helps frame the contrast between his public responsibilities and private confusion.

A rainy return

After a late-night encounter in the basement, Acharya makes his way home at around two in the morning in heavy rain. He is described as happy and unmindful, his shirt sticking to him and his trousers sitting precariously because he has left his belt in the basement. The soaked return echoes his earlier journey from Marine Drive, but the emotional circumstances have changed: that earlier walk ended with Lavanya caring for him and his attention turning to their marriage; this one follows his meeting with Oparna.

At home, the light is on and the room has been tidied. Changed curtains and a tablecloth, along with the books removed from the couch, tell him that something in the household has shifted. He sees Lavanya asleep in the bedroom. Her dream takes place in a rain forest, where she searches for a shop selling cashews and recognizes Acharya when an elephant’s head appears through the rain. The season’s imagery thus extends beyond outdoor weather into her dream, while the narrative returns from his night in the rain to the marriage whose presence continues to shape his choices.
