Navy Nagar
Serious MenNavy Nagar is a setting on Arvind Acharya’s route between the Institute of Theory and Research, Marine Drive, and the Professors’ Quarters. Its quiet lanes become a passage through the novel’s monsoon city and, in a separate morning episode, a place from which Acharya retreats after only a brief walk.
Setting and Routes
In the evening, Acharya wanders from the Institute of Theory and Research through Navy Nagar to Marine Drive. On another occasion, he sets out in tracksuit and running shoes, intending to stroll through Navy Nagar’s inner lanes, but turns back after ten minutes. The two journeys establish the area less as a destination than as part of Acharya’s movement through the city.
The Monsoon Approach
On the evening walk, the weather gathers as Acharya passes through Navy Nagar. At Marine Drive, he watches the Arabian Sea under a grey sky as the wind strengthens and the monsoon advances; traffic appears panicked, and dust, leaves, old newspapers, and a blue kerchief blow across the road. Rain first falls as drizzle, then becomes a torrent that hides buildings across the bay. The route connects Navy Nagar to a broader coastal scene in which the arrival of the rains transforms the city’s pace and visibility.
Acharya’s Morning Walk
The morning walk offers a contrasting view of Navy Nagar. Acharya leaves the Professors’ Quarters partly to impress Lavanya if she calls, but the sight of sailors in white shorts cycling or riding motorbikes puts him off. He also finds something foolish about people wearing white in the monsoon. Returning after ten minutes, he does not go straight home; instead, he walks inside the Professors’ Quarters and discovers that its clear blue pool is in use in the mornings. The brief excursion makes Navy Nagar a setting for his restlessness as well as a threshold back into the ordered residential surroundings he has left.
