Oparna's letter to the Ministry of Defence

Serious Men

Oparna's letter to the Ministry of Defence turns a concealed scientific fraud into a formal institutional crisis. Delivered as an ordinary courier letter, it records Oparna Goshmaulik's allegation that Arvind Acharya directed her to falsify the Balloon Mission's findings; its arrival sets an inquiry in motion, even as Acharya initially treats it with indifference.

Delivery and Form

A morose Institute peon drops the courier letter on Ayyan Mani's table as though delivering a grievance. It appears unremarkable, but Ayyan recognizes its source: the Ministry of Defence. Before opening it, he furtively looks toward Acharya's door and the main entrance, registering the risk and secrecy surrounding its contents. The letter is from Bhaskar Basu and addressed to Arvind Acharya.

The document's official form gives Oparna's accusation an institutional audience. Basu says that the Ministry has received a letter from Oparna, identified as head of the Astrobiology lab and coordinator of the Balloon Mission, and has independently verified that she wrote it. The letter is therefore not presented merely as an unverified report: the Ministry's notice makes authorship, allegation, and the prospect of formal review explicit.

Allegations and Inquiry

As summarized in Basu's notice, Oparna gives a detailed chronology of the alleged fraud. She says she first informed Acharya that the sampler had yielded no evidence of life. According to her account, he then instructed her to contaminate one sampler and fabricate a report so that the Institute could claim microscopic life had been detected at the improbable altitude of 41 kilometres above Earth. She further alleges that he threatened severe professional consequences if she refused to comply.

Oparna accepts moral responsibility for her own actions and offers to resign. Basu nevertheless frames the matter as an extraordinary allegation requiring investigation, rather than treating her offer as a resolution. He announces that he will come to the Institute on Wednesday by noon with an empowered committee for an internal inquiry, instructs senior faculty to remain available, and asks Acharya to appear before the committee. The letter thus joins an admission of participation to an accusation against a superior, while setting out a specific procedure for examining both.

Reception and Consequences

Ayyan reads the notice twice before realizing that he has stood up. One corner of the paper quivers in the air conditioner's breeze, giving the official document a visible tremor as the news takes hold. He sits, steadies the letter with official envelopes from his bottom drawer, and carries it into Acharya's room. Its arrival produces in him a fear mixed with sorrow and anticipation, which he recognizes from an earlier occasion when he had to tell a friend's aged father that his only son had drowned at Aksa.

Acharya regards the letter without interest and returns to Topolov's Superman. The contrast between the document's grave instructions and his quiet dismissal sharpens the suspense: an empowered inquiry has been announced, but the person it concerns does not yet respond as though the accusation can alter his attention. The letter's decisive function is to make the alleged fabrication legible as an official case, shifting the Balloon Mission controversy toward an investigation with Acharya summoned to answer.
