The Ship as a Prize

The Ship as a Prize
A Private Windfall
Yabu arrives in Anjiro and discovers that Erasmus contains hundreds of muskets, cannon, powder, and silver. The cargo offers him a chance to change the balance of power, though he initially conceals its scale from those around him.
A New Strategy
Yabu imagines a trained regiment of gun-armed samurai and considers how such a force might influence the coming conflict between Toranaga and Ishido. The weapons are attractive not only as military tools but as a route to advancement.
A Risky Choice
The treasure and arms make Yabu willing to defy Toranaga’s instruction that allied lords remain in Yedo. He has gained a new possibility, but his secret departure immediately exposes him to suspicion and political danger.
Toranaga Takes the Cargo

Toranaga Takes the Cargo
A Claim of Authority
Toda Hiro-matsu arrives with orders to take the ship and its contents for Toranaga. Yabu recognizes that refusing would force him into open combat with Toranaga’s superior forces.
The Gift That Is Not a Gift
Yabu presents the ship as a gift, trying to preserve face and keep his own options open. Toranaga nevertheless takes the weapons, bullion, and Blackthorne, while also inviting Yabu to accompany the convoy to Osaka.
A Fractured Bargain
Yabu loses the cargo that inspired his plan but gains a chance to present himself as a useful ally. His outward generosity conceals anger and calculation, while Toranaga’s apparent acceptance keeps Yabu uncertain about what has truly been decided.
The Musket Regiment Bargain

The Musket Regiment Bargain
A Proposal for Survival
With Toranaga threatened and the Council divided, Yabu offers to create a five-hundred-man gun regiment using the weapons taken from Erasmus. He presents it as a way to win a decisive battle and secure more territory.
A Calculated Alliance
Toranaga accepts the plan conditionally, gives Yabu control of the regiment, and promises additional lands if the strategy succeeds. Yabu swears allegiance but refuses to become a full vassal, preserving his claim to rule Izu independently.
Mutual Suspicion
Both men treat the bargain as useful rather than fully trustworthy. Yabu intends to train and command the regiment; Toranaga wants the weapons and Blackthorne’s knowledge while continuing to assess whether Yabu will remain loyal.
Yabu’s Allegiance Under Pressure

Yabu’s Allegiance Under Pressure
A New Threat
Nebara Jozen arrives in Anjiro with notice that the Council will convene and demands explanations for Yabu’s gun training. A new Regent has been appointed, threatening to restore the Council’s power against Toranaga.
Choosing a Side
Yabu considers obeying Ishido’s summons to protect his house, while Omi argues that Ishido will ultimately take Izu and that Toranaga remains the stronger long-term choice. The argument turns loyalty into a tactical decision with immediate consequences.
Treachery and Commitment
After Jozen and his men are killed, Yabu submits to Toranaga and accepts his sword and promises of territory. Yet his allegiance remains strategic; he continues to seek advantage and to preserve the possibility of changing sides if circumstances shift.
The Betrayal and Seppuku

The Betrayal and Seppuku
A Charge of Treason
Toranaga confronts Yabu with evidence that he opened a secret route for ninja during the attack on Osaka Castle and had Captain Sumiyori killed. Yabu denies the charges, but accepts that Toranaga has the authority to condemn him.
A Final Bargain
Yabu asks to die in battle rather than by immediate seppuku, but Toranaga refuses. Yabu names Omi as heir to the Kasigi house and gives his last instructions, including orders concerning the future fleet and the threat posed by the Heir.
Death and Consequences
Yabu performs seppuku with composure, and Omi acts as his second. Toranaga then appoints Omi commander of the Musket Regiment and heir to Izu, while Yabu’s shifting loyalties end in a final act of obedience to the system he repeatedly tried to manipulate.
