Kiyama–Onoshi rivalry
ShōgunKiyama–Onoshi rivalry is an enmity Toranaga plans to turn into a weapon in the coming battle. He expects Kiyama to abandon his side and strike Lord Onoshi; that attack would signal Toranaga’s guns to advance and help him roll up the opposing army. The rivalry is therefore both a conflict between two lords and a hinge in Toranaga’s carefully staged military and political designs.
Rivalry as a Battlefield Opportunity
In Toranaga’s private calculations, Kiyama’s hatred of Lord Onoshi makes a change of allegiance conceivable. If Kiyama turns against his rival during the battle, the attack will serve as a signal for Toranaga’s guns to charge. Toranaga expects to exploit the resulting disorder and defeat his enemies. This is a forecast, not a report that Kiyama has already changed sides or attacked Onoshi: the plan depends on Toranaga’s reading of their enmity and on Kiyama acting as anticipated.
The Planned Reward and Its Trap
Toranaga intends to reward Kiyama’s expected role by giving him all of Lord Onoshi’s lands and inviting him to appoint Saruji as his heir. But the proposed reward also places Kiyama in a vulnerable position. Once elevated as a powerful Christian lord, Toranaga expects Kiyama to flaunt a religion that remains illegal under the Taikō’s Expulsion Edicts. Toranaga anticipates that Kasigi Omi and other regents could then call for the edicts to be invoked, turning Kiyama into Omi’s prey and creating a path to remove him.
Political Meaning
The rivalry has no settled outcome in the evidence: Kiyama’s defection, Onoshi’s defeat, and the transfer of lands remain elements of Toranaga’s projected future. Its significance lies in how Toranaga treats private hatred as a lever. He plans first to use the hostility between Kiyama and Lord Onoshi to help win the battle, then to make Kiyama’s anticipated success the beginning of a separate political vulnerability.
