Life is a dewdrop within a dewdrop
ShōgunThe dewdrop image gives concise form to Toranaga’s sense that life is fragile and small within a larger uncertainty. Introduced as part of his usual way of facing problems, it becomes more revealing when he cannot sleep and finds that too many questions are pressing at once.
The Image and Its Meaning
Toranaga reflects, “Wasn’t life just a dewdrop within a dewdrop?” The nested image makes existence seem both delicate and recursively diminished: a dewdrop is already fleeting, yet it is contained within another dewdrop. In the passage, this thought accompanies his willingness to let unresolved problems wait rather than treat every uncertainty as something that must be settled immediately.
Toranaga’s Habit of Waiting
The narration emphasizes that sleeplessness is rare for Toranaga. He normally leaves the most pressing problem until the next day, reasoning that if he is alive then, he will solve it as well as he can. He has learned to trust peaceful sleep as a source of answers; if it provides none, the dewdrop image offers a reason not to make that failure absolute.
The Thought Under Pressure
On this night, the familiar composure does not remove the questions. There are too many perplexities to ponder, and his immediate concern is what to do about Ishido. The expression therefore marks a contrast between Toranaga’s customary patience and the unusual pressure of the present moment: he still has a philosophy of uncertainty, but uncertainty has become difficult to set aside.
