The Truth is already clear

Shōgun

The Truth is already clear is the decisive response in a password exchange that lets Toranaga recognize Hiro-matsu in a setting of constant danger. The line echoes a Buddhist teaching attributed to Saraha, but here it also performs a practical task: it confirms that the man at the door is the trusted counselor Toranaga expects.

The password exchange

Toranaga hears nearly imperceptible footsteps and readies his sword. Because assassins are always a threat, he changes his sleeping room, guards, and password each night. The footsteps stop outside the shoji; Hiro-matsu begins the password by asking, “If the Truth is already clear, what is the use of meditation?” Toranaga supplies the answering challenge: “And if the Truth is hidden?”

Hiro-matsu answers, “It’s already clear,” correctly completing the exchange. Only after Toranaga sees that the visitor is truly his counselor does his sword relax. The expression thus belongs to a system of precautions: knowledge of the words alone is not the final reassurance; recognition of Hiro-matsu confirms the person behind them.

Meaning and use

The exchange’s logic turns on the apparent opposition between truth being clear and truth being hidden. Hiro-matsu’s answer refuses to treat those conditions as mutually exclusive: even the question of hidden truth receives the response that it is already clear. The wording is attributed to the ancient Tantaric Buddhist teacher Saraha, giving the password the form of a remembered teaching rather than a merely arbitrary signal.

In this scene, however, the saying is also an instrument of trust. Its successful repetition allows Toranaga to move from armed suspicion toward admitting Hiro-matsu into the room. The phrase’s reflective meaning and its immediate use remain joined: a teaching about truth becomes a means of establishing who is present.

Narrative function

The exchange compresses Toranaga’s vulnerability and discipline into a small domestic encounter. He sleeps under shifting protections and keeps his sword ready, yet a familiar voice and the correct words are not enough until he verifies Hiro-matsu with his own eyes. The password briefly makes knowledge a safeguard, while the final visual recognition completes the safeguard that speech alone cannot provide.
