Toranaga delays his answer to Zataki

Shōgun

Toranaga delays his answer to Zataki by a day, turning a demand for a response into a carefully bounded pause. He publicly accepts the Council of Regents’ message, but makes clear that his answer will come at the same time the following day; Zataki agrees after an old samurai argues that the choice requires time the scrolls do not provide.

The Message and the Delay

Toranaga holds a scroll and tells Zataki that he will answer the next day. When Zataki motions to a second scroll and asks Buntaro to give it to his master, Toranaga interrupts with an emphatic refusal. He then shifts into formal public language, accepting the Council’s message and naming Zataki—his brother and the Council’s ambassador—as the person to whom he will deliver his answer tomorrow at that time.

The exchange distinguishes acceptance of the message from a decision on its contents. Toranaga does not reject the Council’s communication, but neither does he let the second scroll prompt an immediate answer. The timing is precise: he promises a response, not an indefinite postponement.

Zataki Accepts the Postponement

Zataki begins to challenge the proposal, but an old samurai quietly intervenes. He describes the matter as a solemn choice that goes beyond what is written in the scrolls, and argues that allowing Toranaga the time he requires is fair and honorable. His private, measured appeal gives a rationale for the delay without displacing Toranaga’s public declaration.

Zataki accepts. He puts the second scroll back into his sleeve and apologizes to Toranaga for his manners. The scroll’s return makes the immediate result visible: the requested answer has been deferred, and the parties leave the question open until the promised time.

The Unresolved Political Exchange

After agreeing to wait, Zataki asks where Yabu is and says he has a scroll for him, only one in his case. The conversation therefore turns from Toranaga’s deferred answer to a separate delivery, while leaving the Council’s message unresolved. The scene’s tension rests on that controlled interval: Toranaga has complied formally, but the substance of his response remains unknown.
