The Man at the Standing Babas’ Den

A Debt of Life
A sudden rescue
When a sword-wielding man attacks the crowded den, Abdullah trips and restrains him before Lin or Karla can be harmed. Lin recognizes the skill and courage involved and tries to thank him, but Abdullah brushes off the debt with easy modesty.
An unfinished connection
Abdullah vanishes before Lin can learn much about him. The encounter leaves an impression of a natural fighter and a man whose calm conceals danger. Their later friendship begins with this act of protection, though neither yet knows how consequential it will be.
Brothers in a Strange City

Chosen Family
A shared idea of brotherhood
Abdullah and Lin meet again when Khaderbhai brings Lin to the Blind Singers’ performance. After hearing the story of Abdullah’s brothers killed in the Iran-Iraq war, Lin understands why Khader’s claim that they are brothers might matter to them both.
A promise made
Abdullah solemnly decides to like Lin and asks him to call him by his name rather than “Mr. Lin.” They agree to remember that night as the beginning of their brothering. Their bond is chosen rather than inherited, forged from exile, grief, and mutual recognition.
Trust Against Warning

Friendship With a Dangerous Man
The help Abdullah gives
Abdullah takes Lin to meet Ranjitbhai and arranges a continuing supply of medicines for Lin’s slum clinic. Lin sees how Abdullah’s standing can make doors open, and how carefully he treats the people others fear or avoid. The visit deepens Lin’s sense that he can rely on him.
A choice to stand beside him
Prabaker warns Lin that Abdullah is a killer who works for Khaderbhai. Lin believes the warning but chooses the relationship anyway. Prison has taught him that loyalty under threat is rare, and Abdullah seems like a man who would stand beside a friend at any cost. Lin pledges himself to him without demanding that he be innocent.
The Apparent Death

A Friendship Torn Apart
A city erupts
After police kill Abdullah in a public confrontation, the crowd seizes his body and carries it away. Lin sees the man he loves as a brother disappear amid the violence, while the city’s anger and grief surge around him. The loss compounds his earlier bereavements and deepens his alienation.
Grief without certainty
No funeral follows because Abdullah’s body is never recovered. Lin accepts that his friend is dead, although part of him remains unsettled by the circumstances. He continues to live with the memory of their brotherhood and the unanswered question of who Abdullah truly was.
The Living Friend Returns

Recognition and Reunion
A surprise by the sea
When Abdullah touches Lin’s shoulder near the sea, Lin first believes he is seeing a ghost. Abdullah explains that he survived the shooting, was hidden and treated, and spent a long period recovering. The reunion releases some of the grief Lin has carried since the crowd took Abdullah away.
A relationship still marked by danger
Abdullah tells Lin that Iranian enemies and secret-police connections helped set the trap that led to the shooting. His return does not make their bond simple: he remains a fighter and a target, while Lin is still entangled in violent loyalties. Yet the friendship resumes with the intimacy of brothers who know what the other has risked.
