Dave taking a knife and gun to an open mic

Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman

Dave’s decision to bring a switchblade and a 9mm handgun to a comedy show transforms a routine open mic into a near-encounter with lethal violence. The event, which Lindy West understood at the time as an uneventful night out with Ahamefule J. Oluo, became significant only when she later learned that Dave had prepared for a fight she and Oluo did not know was possible.

Background and Misunderstanding

West and Oluo went to the open mic, performed their sets, enjoyed themselves, and went home. Dave, however, interpreted Oluo’s comment about his falling down the stairs as a sign that Oluo might attack him. The disagreement concerned whether comedy clubs were safe for women, but Dave imagined it escalating into a physical confrontation.

Dave’s Preparation

Nearly a year later, a mutual friend showed West a text exchange in which Dave described anticipating a fight at the Underground that night. Dave said he had spent two hours working out while visualizing the confrontation. He had a switchblade with him and a 9mm handgun in his trunk, and said he was ready for anything. The weapons were not an abstract boast: Dave brought them to a comedy show because he believed Oluo might confront him.

Aftermath and Significance

There was no fight: West and Oluo finished their sets and left. The danger emerged retrospectively, through the messages that disclosed what Dave had privately prepared to do. West describes the revelation as a glimpse of how little separated her intact, ordinary life from its possible destruction, and recognizes why people might choose to stay quiet.

West also frames Dave’s fear as racialized. In her account, an insecure white man treated disagreement as a life-threatening threat from a Black man, while Dave himself was the only person in the situation who had issued a threat. The episode gives material force to her insistence that speech onstage cannot simply be separated from conduct and consequences offstage: a dispute over comedy’s safety became, in Dave’s imagination and preparation, a potentially armed encounter.
