Hagan’s Decline

A Priest Wears Down
Physical weakness
Father Andrew Hagan grows pale and exhausted as crowds and doubts accumulate around St. Joseph’s. His body reflects a spiritual fear he cannot communicate clearly.
A warning dismissed
He asks that Alice stay away and says the church feels empty. Others interpret his words as illness or overstrain rather than evidence of danger.
Hagan Dies at Dinner

A Choking Death
An apparent medical crisis
Hagan suddenly struggles to breathe during dinner, convinced that food is lodged in his throat. Fenn and Delgard attempt to dislodge it as Bishop Caines calls for help.
A lasting unease
The official finding is a heart attack, but Fenn remembers seeing something in Hagan’s throat. The death reinforces the sense that the priest’s earlier fear was not merely private anxiety.
Leonard Dies in the Fire

A Father Trapped
The chase ends violently
Fenn and Nancy follow reporters taking Leonard away, and a chain of collisions ignites the petrol tanker. Leonard is trapped in a burning car.
Alice loses another anchor
Fenn cannot reach him before the fire worsens. Leonard’s death leaves Molly and Alice facing a second loss within days of Hagan’s death.
Delgard’s Investigation Ends

The Investigator Is Killed
A final vigil
After translating Woolgar’s manuscript, Delgard prays alone in St. Joseph’s, convinced that the church is spiritually depleted and that evil is near.
The statue explodes
A cracking statue bursts apart and its fragments kill Delgard. Fenn finds his body, losing the one ally who had taken his supernatural concerns seriously.
Alice’s Death and Return

The Central Loss
A child is shot
Wilkes shoots Alice in front of the congregation. Her apparent death ends the public performance of healing and triggers a reversal of the earlier cures.
A hostile return
Alice rises again in a changed form and speaks as though connected to Einor. Her death does not end the danger; it begins the final confrontation.
