The Pilot’s Last Resource

Navigation and Survival
The Rutter
Blackthorne’s work as a pilot depends on rutters, charts, and practical knowledge of currents, reefs, and winds. He carries both his own voyage record and a stolen Portuguese rutter, making his ship valuable to anyone seeking access to the Pacific routes.
A Knowledgeable Survivor
The storm strips away much of his expedition and leaves him with a handful of sick survivors. Even after landfall, his navigation skills remain the main reason powerful men keep him alive.
The Captured Armory

Weapons in the Holds
A New Military Possibility
Yabu discovers a large stock of European muskets, cannon, powder, and shot aboard the Erasmus. He imagines a disciplined firearm unit that could give him an advantage in the coming conflict, even though traditional samurai values prize individual combat and the sword.
The Stakes of Control
The armory becomes a strategic prize contested by Yabu and Toranaga. The weapons are not merely cargo: whoever controls them may shape the methods and outcome of the approaching war.
The Sea Reveals Its Masters

A Test of Seamanship
Blackthorne Takes the Con
A storm threatens the galley carrying Toranaga and Yabu. Blackthorne and Rodrigues disagree over the safest course, and Blackthorne ultimately brings the vessel to shelter after Rodrigues is swept overboard.
Respect Without Trust
Yabu witnesses that the foreign pilots command skills his own sailors do not possess. The experience gives him the idea of using modern ships and trained crews to control the sea lanes between Yedo and Osaka.
The Black Ship Gamble

Cannon and Narrow Waters
A Dangerous Parley
Trapped by hostile fishing boats near the harbor mouth, Toranaga’s galley cannot break out alone. Blackthorne proposes using the Portuguese frigate’s guns and helps maneuver the galley under its protection.
A Temporary Alliance
Rodrigues recognizes the danger and helps Blackthorne escape the harbor despite the Captain-General’s hostility. Their cooperation gets Toranaga’s party to open water, but the Portuguese Black Ship and its trade monopoly remain a future target in Blackthorne’s plans.
A Ship Rebuilt from Loss

The New Vessel
A Destruction and a Promise
A fire destroys the Erasmus while it lies in Japanese waters, leaving Blackthorne without the ship that could carry him home. Toranaga uses the loss to redirect Blackthorne’s abilities toward a new vessel built under Japanese authority.
A Future at Sea
Blackthorne plans The Lady as a smaller, faster fighting ship and begins identifying the tools, craftsmen, and materials needed. Toranaga’s support makes the project possible, while the ship’s intended use remains bound to their shared but unequal ambitions.
