Compton MacKenna's trust in Vanessa MacKenna and her betrayal

Slow Burn

Compton Thomas MacKenna’s trust in Vanessa MacKenna becomes the means by which she can approach his most consequential act: recording his will video. What he treats as a trusted role, she later describes as a source of resentment, because he leaves his fortune to Kate MacKenna rather than to her. The relationship turns on this reversal—from confidence placed in Vanessa to evidence that she resented, and may have acted against, the man who trusted her.

Trust and the Will Video

Vanessa is behind the camera when Compton records the video, a position Dylan Buchanan says Compton gave her because he trusted her and asked her to film it. The recording captures Compton’s decision to leave his fortune to Kate. As Dylan later explains, Compton had already changed his will, so killing him afterward would not undo that decision. The video thus preserves both Compton’s intention and the betrayal that grows out of Vanessa’s access to it.

Resentment and Betrayal

Vanessa’s private remarks reveal the sharp contrast between what Compton believed he was providing and what she thought she deserved. She dismisses the house and the hundred thousand dollars he left her as inadequate, and resents that he would give his fortune to someone she regards as a stranger. She also says she nearly killed him with the camera. Her words do not establish every detail of what happened, but they make clear that the act of trusting her to record his wishes did not produce loyalty; it gave her proximity to the decision she came to resent.

In the same conversation, Vanessa speaks of Bryce MacKenna as near death after taking pain pills while drunk, and says she had told doctors she feared he might accidentally overdose. This disclosure broadens the betrayal beyond Compton’s inheritance: Vanessa describes a death she has helped present as accidental while speaking with someone she calls sweetheart. The evidence links her grievance over Compton’s estate to a wider scheme, though it does not by itself settle every question about her actions.

Exposure and the Alibi

The later confrontation connects Vanessa’s account to Nate Hallinger’s conduct. Joel Kline says Nate transferred to the Charleston police force to distance himself from Vanessa and learn everything he could about Kate. Dylan accuses Nate of wanting the eighty million dollars and points to Vanessa’s role in filming Compton’s video and the already revised will. Kline then asks whether Vanessa told Nate about it. Nate begins to object, while Dylan challenges the alibi Nate had checked for her on the day the video was made: Nate had called it airtight, Dylan argues, and had reason to know otherwise.

The evidence presents the relationship’s betrayal through a telling sequence: Compton grants Vanessa access in trust; she resents the will he records; and, later, her connection to Nate and his defense of her alibi become grounds for suspicion. The video, meant to carry Compton’s wishes forward, instead helps reveal how his confidence in Vanessa was entangled with the attempt to defeat those wishes.
