Kate MacKenna and Vanessa MacKenna's changing relationship

Slow Burn

Kate MacKenna and Vanessa MacKenna’s relationship changes from cautious reconciliation to exposed hostility. Vanessa first approaches Kate with an offer of family keepsakes and a wish to know her; later, her own disclosures and Dylan Buchanan’s accusation recast that kindness as a gesture shadowed by resentment, greed, and betrayal.

A Tentative Overture

When Vanessa contacts Kate, the conversation begins stiffly but soon turns gracious. She says Anderson Samuel Smith told her how much Kate valued the photographs of her father, and that she had searched the attic of Compton Thomas MacKenna’s house, which she now calls her own. In a box she found photographs, trophies, school papers, and report cards that she believed had belonged to Kate’s father. She offers to send the items or leave them at Anderson Samuel Smith’s office, and promises to keep looking.

Vanessa also invites Kate to visit the house and says she would like to get to know her, describing her as refreshingly different from Bryce and his brothers. She explains that she is staying there because Bryce has returned to the hospital and the house makes visiting him easier. Kate says she would like to see the place someday, but the exchange does not establish that a visit takes place. Afterward, Kate feels guilty for not asking how serious Bryce’s condition is, then recognizes that offering sympathy would have felt hypocritical.

Resentment Beneath the Courtesy

The later revelation gives Vanessa’s overture a more complicated meaning. Believing Kate unconscious, Vanessa speaks contemptuously of the house and of Compton’s decision to leave his fortune to someone outside the family. She says she resented receiving the house and only a comparatively small sum, and reveals that she had nearly killed Compton while filming him. The earlier offer of her time and of the belongings found in the attic thus stands in sharp contrast to her hostility toward Compton and his bequest to Kate.

Betrayal and Reversal

Vanessa’s conduct also implicates her in the danger facing Bryce. She says he is close to dying after taking too many pain pills while drunk, and that she had told the doctors she feared he might accidentally overdose. Her account presents the supposed accident as part of a deliberate scheme, turning her role as Bryce’s wife and caregiver into another source of betrayal.

During the questioning of Nate Hallinger, Dylan states that Vanessa was behind the camera when Compton recorded his video, at Compton’s request, and connects her anger to the announcement that Compton was leaving his fortune to Kate. He adds that Compton had already changed his will, so killing him afterward would not have secured the inheritance for Vanessa. The shift in Kate and Vanessa’s relationship is therefore not simply a change in manner: Vanessa’s initial warmth and offers of connection are set against evidence that she resented the inheritance decision and acted against members of the family. The keepsakes she offered Kate belong to the same family history that Vanessa’s schemes sought to manipulate.
