Vanessa MacKenna
Slow BurnVanessa MacKenna is a member of the MacKenna family whose composure and social polish mask a ruthless pursuit of Compton Thomas MacKenna’s fortune. At the will reading, she appears to have received only Compton MacKenna's House and $100,000, while the much larger inheritance goes to Kate MacKenna. Her later actions reveal that this apparent disappointment was the surface of a far more dangerous scheme: she had been involved in recording Compton’s revised will, resented his decision to favor Kate, and joined Nate Hallinger in seeking the fortune for themselves.
Identity and first appearance
Vanessa enters the family gathering in a pale gray silk pantsuit, with her black hair arranged in a chignon. The description emphasizes her assurance and the attention she draws, while her first words treat the tense gathering as a family reunion with evident sarcasm. She quickly separates herself from the brothers, checks the time, and asks after the attorney. Her attention to the scheduled proceedings makes her seem controlled and purposeful amid the family’s hostility.
She has arrived with Bryce MacKenna, her husband, and says that both of them received letters summoning them. When Ewan MacKenna challenges her about not traveling with Bryce, she explains that she had an art council meeting. Her answer also carries a dismissive edge: she treats the meeting as a cultural matter beyond Ewan’s understanding. The exchange establishes a social confidence that lets her hold her own in a room where the other relatives are openly antagonistic.
At the will reading, Anderson Samuel Smith introduces her to Kate. Vanessa is presented as curious rather than angry toward the newcomer, and she greets Kate politely. That first impression matters because the inheritance immediately makes Kate the focus of the room’s resentment, while Vanessa initially appears more measured than the MacKenna brothers.
The inheritance and her changing position toward Kate
The will gives Vanessa Compton MacKenna's House and $100,000. When Ewan disparages the modest amount and insults her, she answers that she loves the house and believes Compton knew that. Her satisfaction sounds sincere in the moment, but it exists beside the much larger sum—$80 million—that has been left to Kate. The contrast between the inheritance she receives and the fortune she does not is central to understanding her conduct later.
When Kate calmly says she will refuse the inheritance, Vanessa intervenes as she is leaving. She urges Kate to consider Compton’s wishes before giving the money away, then offers a brief expression of goodwill. Anderson cannot simply prepare papers to undo the will; he says he must carry out Compton’s wishes and encourages Kate to review the estate records before deciding. Vanessa’s intervention therefore occurs at a consequential moment: she appears to support Kate’s right to make an informed choice, even as the fortune at stake is the very one she will later be revealed to have coveted.
This early advice does not prove what Vanessa intends at the time, but it acquires a different significance in light of the later disclosures. Her public manner is not a reliable measure of her loyalty. She can appear composed, courteous, and even helpful while her private interests point in the opposite direction.
A carefully cultivated connection
Later, Vanessa telephones Kate after Anderson has told her how much Kate valued photographs of her father. Vanessa says she searched the attic at Compton MacKenna's House and found a box of belongings she believes belonged to him: photographs, trophies, school papers, and report cards. She offers to send them or leave them at Anderson’s office, and promises to keep looking for more. The offer is specific and attentive to something personally meaningful to Kate, not merely a formal gesture between relatives.
Vanessa also explains that she is staying at the house because Bryce has returned to the hospital and the location makes visiting him easier. She invites Kate to come by and says she would like to show her around. She says she would like to get to know Kate, describing her as markedly different from Bryce and his brothers. In this conversation Vanessa is stiff at first, then becomes gracious. The episode gives her a plausible route toward Kate’s trust: a family connection, the promise of her father’s keepsakes, and an invitation into the house that has become Vanessa’s.
The later revelation changes the weight of this apparent kindness without erasing its details. The woman who offered Kate her father’s belongings was also implicated in a plot centered on the estate and on Kate’s inheritance. Her ability to move between personal consideration and calculated deception is one of the defining features of her role.
The conspiracy behind the will
Vanessa had been behind the camera when Compton recorded his will video. He trusted her to film him, and the recording captured him announcing that he was leaving his fortune to Kate. The will had already been changed, so harming Compton afterward could not restore the inheritance to Vanessa. When the scheme is later discussed, Dylan Buchanan identifies her anger at Compton’s decision and connects her to Nate’s pursuit of the $80 million. The camera thus links Vanessa’s access to Compton with the decisive document that thwarted her expectation of the fortune.
Her conduct toward Bryce reveals another strand of the plot. While Kate is hidden nearby, Vanessa speaks with an accomplice and says Bryce is likely to die soon. She describes having given the doctors grounds to believe that any overdose was accidental, while indicating that Bryce had taken too many pain pills when he was too drunk to keep track. The evidence presents this not as a mere fear for her husband’s health but as a deliberate effort to make his death appear unintended. Bryce’s hospitalization and Vanessa’s earlier explanation that she was staying near him therefore take on a darker meaning.
In the same conversation, Vanessa disparages the house and Compton’s decision to leave his fortune to a stranger. She also refers to nearly killing him with the camera. Her words expose the gulf between her earlier claim to love the house and her private contempt for it: the house and $100,000 were inadequate consolation for the fortune she believed she deserved. She speaks as someone who had tolerated an unsatisfactory marriage and a modest inheritance in expectation of something far larger.
Vanessa also prepares a false account of an approaching explosion. She moves Ewan’s car to the end of the drive and parks her own behind it, planning to say that Ewan had blocked her way and prevented her from getting closer. She then stages the appearance of a frightened escape, deliberately making herself look as though she had fled through the grounds. These preparations show that her plans extend beyond obtaining the inheritance: she is arranging the circumstances under which blame might be placed on Ewan and her own presence explained away.
Exposure and narrative role
The conspiracy is exposed through the connection between Vanessa, Nate, and the altered will. During the confrontation, Dylan states that Vanessa filmed Compton and that the will had already been changed to leave the fortune to Kate. Nate disputes the accusation, but Dylan points to Vanessa as someone who will turn against him. The scene makes their partnership unstable: once faced with the consequences, each has reason to shift responsibility onto the other.
That fracture becomes explicit as Vanessa is being forced into a police car. She protests her innocence and declares that the plan was Nate’s idea. Her attempt to separate herself from him comes too late to restore the composed image she presented at the will reading or the gracious one she offered Kate by telephone. Instead, the public outburst confirms that her alliance with Nate has collapsed into mutual accusation.
Vanessa’s narrative function rests on the difference between appearance and motive. The polished relative who claims affection for the house, offers Kate a box of family keepsakes, and urges her not to dismiss Compton’s wishes is also tied to the camera that recorded the will, the scheme surrounding Bryce, and the preparations to divert suspicion toward Ewan. The story reveals her character in stages: first through social performance, then through the contrast between her modest bequest and Kate’s fortune, and finally through private disclosures and her failed attempt to blame Nate. The inheritance is not simply a prize in her plot; it is the motive that makes her kindness, her family role, and her careful staging instruments of deception.
