Lukas Between Fear and Agency
Sonne und BetonLukas’s path traces how repeated exposure to street violence and pressure from friends push him from cautious observer into a participant who must confront the consequences of his choices.

A Closed School Gate

The Gate That Defines His Place
A Familiar Stranger
Lukas arrives late at school without his student ID. The security guard refuses to let him in, despite recognizing him as a student who has attended for years. The rule is applied without regard for the difference between an outsider and someone who belongs there.
The First Retreat
Rather than keep arguing, Lukas gives up and leaves to meet his friends. His decision reflects a pattern he has learned: when a confrontation seems unwinnable, avoid making it worse. But this time, stepping away from the school gate does not lead to safety; it sends him toward a different and more dangerous encounter.
A Beating in the Park

Violence Without a Way Out
The Encounter
On the way to buy cannabis, Lukas and his friends are challenged by Djamel and his group. Julius tries to talk his way through the encounter, but his remarks about whom they might buy from aggravate the situation. Lukas tries to pull Julius away, then finds himself singled out.
The Witnesses
Djamel punches Lukas while the others join in: one kicks him, another records the assault, and his friends freeze. Lukas leaves with a bleeding nose and bruised face. He resents the bystanders and his friends for doing nothing, yet recognizes that he might have reacted just as they did. The attack strengthens his sense that survival depends on reading danger rather than expecting help.
The Baton in His Hand

A Borrowed Role
Pressure to Retaliate
Cem hears about the assault and decides to confront Djamel’s group. Julius has exaggerated the story, making it sound as though Cem was insulted, and Cem urges Lukas to strike Djamel with a telescopic baton. The weapon turns Lukas from a victim into the person expected to begin a second attack.
Refusing the Part
As the confrontation begins, Lukas cannot move. The baton falls from his hand, and Cem takes over the violence himself. Lukas escapes the fight rather than stay and join in. His flight is neither a clean victory nor a simple failure: it leaves him afraid of both groups, but it also marks a limit he is unwilling to cross.
A Risk He Accepts

The Pull of Belonging
Friends Make the Case
When Sanchez proposes stealing the newly delivered school computers, Lukas objects. He understands that breaking into his own school could bring serious consequences, and he warns Gino to consider what his father might do if the police became involved. Gino’s furious reaction reveals that Lukas has underestimated the desperation behind his friend’s decision.
Choosing to Join
The promise of money, new clothes, and the chance to act alongside his friends eventually outweighs Lukas’s caution. He agrees to take part, partly because he needs new shoes and his father will not give him money for them. The decision is his, even though he has spent much of the planning insisting it is a bad idea; his need for acceptance helps turn reluctance into complicity.
The Secret Becomes Public

Fear of Being Known
Evidence and Rumor
After the theft, police brief the students, and Lukas worries that details of the burglary will lead investigators to the group. His anxiety grows when he learns that Taner has told classmates he saw Lukas trying to sell computers. The accusation makes the secret feel exposed even before an official charge or arrest appears.
A False Opening
Herr Reinicke summons Lukas and tries to recruit him as a source, framing the investigation in openly racist terms. Lukas understands that the teacher suspects students but does not know everything. He leaves without naming his friends, caught between fear of punishment, disgust at Reinicke’s prejudice, and the code of silence he shares with the others.
At the Hospital Door

Consequences Beyond the Theft
The Search for Gino
After learning that Gino has struck his father and fled, Lukas joins Julius and Sanchez in searching for him. The news overturns Lukas’s belief that Gino is the gentlest and most peaceful person he knows. He worries about Gino’s injuries and about what the family violence has driven him to do.
An Unfinished Arrival
The friends learn that Gino has been found unconscious and taken to Klinikum Neukölln. Lukas helps Julius into the hospital and stays with the group as they ask for Gino. The story ends before they learn the full extent of Gino’s condition, leaving Lukas at the threshold of a crisis he cannot solve through avoidance, silence, or money.
