Princeton University

Speak No Evil

Princeton University functions in the novel as a shorthand for institutional prestige, family wealth, and a future that appears already secured. The university is not visited or described directly; instead, its significance emerges through the way Rowan wears its name as part of his identity and through the contrast between his confidence and Niru’s precarious position.

Appearance Through Rowan

Princeton University first appears through Rowan’s worn Princeton hat at a crowded party. Rowan has always worn the hat because he has always known he is going there. The object makes the university visible before the institution itself does: its name becomes a portable sign of certainty, status, and belonging. Even though the hat is old and tattered, Rowan’s expectation remains undiminished, suggesting that the privilege attached to Princeton is not dependent on present polish.

Privilege and Social Position

The university is associated with Rowan’s ability to behave as though ordinary restraints do not apply to him. His family can afford for him to have no concern for consequences, and that economic security helps explain his contemptuous confidence. Princeton therefore represents more than academic advancement. It marks a social position from which Rowan can presume recognition and continued opportunity, while other characters must negotiate race, sexuality, family authority, and psychological distress merely to remain safe.

Contrast with Niru’s School Life

Princeton’s symbolic force grows through its contrast with Niru’s experience. Niru is a gifted track athlete, but his performance is disrupted by panic, depression, and the pressure created by his father’s rejection of his homosexuality. His teachers and coaches respond to visible symptoms without access to the family crisis behind them: Ms. McConnell grants extra time after Niru’s forced trip to Nigeria, while Coach Erickson urges him to run without holding back. Against this unstable background, Rowan’s assumed route to Princeton appears almost unnaturally smooth.

The contrast is also racialized. At the party, Niru is black, sober, and frightened by locker-room harassment while white students treat rules as optional and imitate black speech and movement for amusement. The Princeton hat thus belongs to the same social world as the party’s casual entitlement. It signifies a future from which Rowan can mock others without fearing that one humiliation, accusation, or institutional encounter will destroy his prospects.

Princeton and the Novel’s Social Critique

Princeton University helps organize the novel’s critique of unequal access to security. Rowan’s anticipated admission is never framed as a goal he must struggle toward; it is part of what he has always known about himself. That certainty operates as cultural and economic capital, distinguishing him from Niru, whose intelligence and athletic ability do not protect him from familial violence, religious coercion, or public suspicion.

The university’s name also exposes the instability beneath elite confidence. Rowan’s hat is tattered, and his behavior is vulgar and predatory rather than conventionally admirable, yet the institutional prestige attached to Princeton remains intact. The juxtaposition separates educational branding from moral worth: admission to a famous university does not make Rowan humane, just as Niru’s exclusion from a similarly secure future does not make him lesser.

Narrative Significance

Because Princeton University remains an anticipated destination rather than a setting, it operates as an imagined future against which the characters’ present lives are measured. Its absence is meaningful. The university is powerful precisely as a promise Rowan can carry with him, while Niru’s future is repeatedly narrowed by forces outside his control. In this structure, Princeton becomes an emblem of the unequal futures distributed by class and race: for Rowan, a destination already possessed in imagination; for Niru, a reminder that talent alone cannot guarantee safety, recognition, or survival.
