Captain Lonagan

Station Eleven

Captain Lonagan is Dr. Eleven’s mentor and companion in Miranda’s Station Eleven comic, where their journey across the darkened waters above the Undersea brings the comic’s central conflict into personal focus. His defense of those who long for Earth complicates the divide between the station’s inhabitants and the people seeking to leave it; his death later leaves Dr. Eleven alone with a message that echoes that longing.

Identity and Role

Captain Lonagan appears within the comic Miranda is drawing, not as a participant in the novel’s outer storyline. He is Dr. Eleven’s mentor, and the two travel together by boat across the waters of Station Eleven. Their small rowboat passes over an Undersea gate, placing Lonagan and Dr. Eleven above a hidden network of vast fallout shelters beneath the station’s oceans.

View of the Undersea

The Undersea is home to three hundred people who, after fifteen years of perpetual twilight, want to return to Earth and seek amnesty under alien rule. Dr. Eleven describes the waters above its gate as perilous. Lonagan answers by urging him to try to understand the people below: they want to see sunlight again, he points out, and asks whether that desire can be blamed. His response does not erase the danger of the conflict, but gives the longing behind it a human claim.

Death and Significance

Lonagan’s death is shown through the aftermath rather than a narrated account of the killing. Miranda plans a close-up of the note an Undersea assassin leaves on his body: “We were not meant for this world. Let us go home.” In the following image, Dr. Eleven holds the note on a rocky outcropping, with a small dog beside his boots. The sequence links Lonagan’s loss to the Undersea’s desire to leave, while shifting the comic’s focus to Dr. Eleven’s own estrangement: he returns to his city and damaged home, carrying the note’s words into a life marked by loneliness and by memories of Earth.
