Control as a Creed

A soldier shaped by pain
Fear of vulnerability
Leland Falkirk has built his identity around control, endurance, and deliberate self-inflicted pain. His childhood in a punitive religious home leaves him with deep hostility toward faith and an expectation of betrayal.
A functional paranoia
His discipline makes him an effective DERO officer, but the same habits turn uncertainty into suspicion. Under pressure, he begins to see danger in everyone around him.
The Return of the Witnesses

A secret begins to unravel
New clues appear
Polaroids and anonymous notes encourage witnesses to investigate the motel. Falkirk realizes that someone inside the conspiracy is undermining the memory-wiping operation.
Suspicion spreads inward
Rather than trusting the researchers who urge study and disclosure, Falkirk suspects them of being compromised. He treats uncertainty itself as evidence for his most alarming theory.
A Failed Chain of Command

Authority divides
The conference call
Falkirk argues for a rapid roundup and possible elimination of the witnesses. General Maxwell D. Riddenhour, FBI leadership, and the National Security Adviser refuse to endorse immediate mass violence.
A rogue decision
Falkirk treats hesitation as weakness and plans to act without approval. His loyalty to control and his certainty of catastrophe now place him in conflict with the very chain of command he claims to serve.
The Blizzard Manhunt

Falkirk hunts the witnesses
A false quarantine
Falkirk blocks Interstate 80 under the pretense of another toxic leak. His men search the Tranquility Motel, only to discover that the group escaped into the storm.
Violence on the road
Falkirk’s force catches part of the group at Vista Valley. When a vehicle approaches, he orders a soldier to fire, killing Stefan Wycazik and turning a recovery operation into an armed attack.
The Nuclear Last Resort

Control ends in self-destruction
Threat to destroy the witnesses
After bringing captives to Thunder Hill, Falkirk reveals that he has armed two backpack nuclear weapons. He intends to erase the secret and prevent what he considers alien takeover.
The plan is stopped
Dominick Corvaisis and Brendan Cronin use their abilities to remove the weapons’ components. Falkirk, unable to accept the new order, kills himself rather than risk being changed.
