Cayleb

Systema Delenda Est

Cayleb is Isaac Hartson’s roommate, technological counterpart, and chosen family. A tinker whose superpower has given him both extraordinary mechanical talent and a double-sized head, he has spent more than a decade sharing a cramped apartment with Isaac, including the years when both were teenagers in the system. His sudden recruitment by Star Central is therefore more than a career opportunity: it is the abrupt breaking of the domestic arrangement that has made their precarious lives bearable.

Identity and Circumstances

Cayleb is identified as a tinker through both his power and his surroundings. He works at a computer surrounded by a nest of wires, monitors, and improvised machinery, and his oversized cranium is supported by a neck brace because he cannot turn his neck normally. The physical effects of his ability make him immediately conspicuous, while his technical talent gives him access to a world of devices beyond the means of the low-income apartment he shares with Isaac.

His relationship with Isaac is described in familial terms: Cayleb is practically Isaac’s brother, and the two have lived together for over a decade after coming through the system as teenagers. Their shared history is also marked by the same catastrophe. Both were among the hundreds of children orphaned by a super-fight nearly twenty years earlier, when a twenty-block radius of Star City was devastated. That background places Cayleb’s ordinary domestic life against the city’s larger culture of superhuman conflict, where Star Central struggles to contain powerful criminal groups such as Blacktime’s organization.

Home, Work, and Ordinary Life

Cayleb’s first substantial appearance occurs in the apartment’s common room, where he is absorbed in his computer work. Isaac has just returned from a robbery and takes care to compose himself before entering, even though Cayleb is deeply involved in his own work. The caution reflects Isaac’s awareness that a tinker’s talent might notice more than an ordinary roommate would. Cayleb, however, greets him cheerfully and appears to be in an unusually good mood.

The source of that mood is a recorded super-fight near Isaac’s hospital. Cayleb shows Isaac footage of flying supers battling floating mechanical spheres, with blue and white energy beams crossing the sky and one sphere departing the hospital at high speed. Cayleb recognizes the technology as Professor Mechaniacal’s work but not the villain’s usual method: the attack is too loud and too small-scale, suggesting that someone has discovered one of Professor Mechaniacal’s hidden stashes. His enthusiasm reveals both technical competence and an almost childlike excitement about advanced machinery, even when the machinery is being used in a dangerous criminal operation.

Cayleb’s reaction also supplies a contrast with Isaac. He can discuss the fight as an intriguing technological incident, while Isaac is alarmed by the possibility that violence has reached their apartment block. Isaac knows that a genuine super-fight could crush people like them, despite both men being metas. Cayleb’s good humor briefly dims when the conversation touches the history they share, showing that his enthusiasm does not erase the trauma beneath their ordinary routines.

Recruitment by Star Central

The turning point in Cayleb’s life comes when two uniformed supers arrive: Cyberlocution, a cybernetic tech specialist, and an unnamed bruiser associated with Star Central’s familiar golden-rayed insignia. Cyberlocution identifies Isaac as a D-Class Strength-type power but is primarily interested in Cayleb. Cayleb, apparently unaware of the tension his arrival creates for Isaac, explains that Cyberlocution recovered his drone from the hospital fight and believes that he has what it takes to work for Central.

Cayleb receives the offer with open excitement. He imagines the equipment he will be able to use and dreams aloud of the superior technology Star Central might provide, including a solution better than the neck brace supporting his oversized head. Isaac distrusts supers and understands that the opportunity could separate them, but he suppresses that distrust and congratulates Cayleb. He even encourages him to remember his old friend when he begins building better devices and supercars. Cayleb answers with confidence that he will make Isaac good equipment, treating the promise as a continuation of their friendship rather than recognizing it as a farewell.

Cyberlocution then turns the offer into an immediate physical transformation. He produces a small packet from a pouch, presses it against Cayleb’s chest, and causes it to expand into a cybernetic suit designed to wrap around Cayleb’s enlarged cranium. Cayleb stands—something he does not often do—and his grin grows wider. The suit is both demonstration and threshold: Star Central does not merely invite him into a new life; it equips him for that life in front of Isaac.

Separation and Consequences

Cayleb’s departure is executed with startling efficiency. Professional movers arrive, secure all his belongings, and remove them in less than five minutes. Cyberlocution and the unnamed bruiser wait impatiently while Cayleb shakes Isaac’s hand. More than ten years of shared residence, including their years in the system, ends in roughly twenty minutes.

The emotional force of the scene comes from the mismatch between the importance of the relationship and the speed of the removal. Cayleb leaves with the opportunity he has wanted, while Isaac is left with a mixture of numbness and relief. Isaac has just committed a robbery intended to empower Cayleb in all but name, yet Cayleb’s discovery by Star Central makes that act suddenly complicated and perhaps unnecessary. The new suit and the professional movers turn Cayleb’s advancement into a concrete loss for the person who helped make it possible.

After Cayleb is taken away, the apartment becomes physically and acoustically different. Isaac retreats to his room, and the constant hum of Cayleb’s machinery disappears, leaving an eerie silence. Cayleb’s absence is therefore registered not only as loneliness but as the removal of the technological presence that had filled the shared space. Isaac cannot remain in that silence for long: he still has work, bills, and rent, as well as one hundred thousand credits’ worth of stolen softchip that he must somehow liquidate. Cayleb’s successful recruitment thus sharpens Isaac’s burdens even as it opens a path for Cayleb.

Narrative Role and Significance

Cayleb functions as the intimate human scale of a world dominated by supers, inventions, and institutional power. His tinker ability connects him to the spectacular machinery of Star City, but his most important narrative function is relational. He gives Isaac a brother-like bond, a home, and a reason to act; Isaac’s robbery is undertaken partly to improve Cayleb’s prospects. Yet the reward arrives through another route, and the same advancement that promises Cayleb better technology removes him from the life he shared with Isaac.

His recruitment also embodies the unequal choices available to metas. Cayleb’s talent is welcomed by Star Central once his usefulness becomes visible, while Isaac remains tied to low-paid work, rent, and covert criminal logistics. Cayleb’s excitement is genuine, but the scene does not present his promotion as uncomplicated liberation. The cybernetic suit, the hurried movers, and the silent apartment all make advancement inseparable from displacement. Cayleb leaves as a friend who has been given a future; Isaac remains behind to manage the costs of that future.
