Dungeon of the Abyssal Horde
Systema Delenda EstDungeon of the Abyssal Horde is a mid-Bismuth dungeon in the inner-world direction, defined by overwhelming scale and concentrated danger. Its blasted terrain and swarming inhabitants make it a nightmare for most adventurers, yet Raine and Leese turn it into a controlled test of their newly enhanced abilities, using the dungeon as a threshold before seeking Bismuth status and the artifacts associated with it.
Setting and Threat
The dungeon appears as an apparently endless, pitch-black plain covered in frigid gravel. The wasteland is crowded with Bismuth-level creatures: hulking organisms somewhere between reptilian and insectoid in form. Their arsenal combines dark lightning, winds capable of severing, a corrosive bite, and sharply developed claws. The dungeon does not permit the cautious isolation of a single opponent; even the best possible engagement involves a swarm of twenty or more, while roaming packs can join an existing fight and multiply the danger.
This combination of hostile terrain, elite creatures, and uncontrollable encounters establishes the dungeon as an ordeal of endurance as much as combat. Its threat comes not only from the strength of any one creature but from the way the environment continually turns a manageable confrontation into a mass attack. The dungeon therefore functions as a concentrated expression of the dangers associated with Bismuth-level exploration.
Raine and Leese’s Expedition
Raine proposes that she and Leese enter Dungeon of the Abyssal Horde to discover what their new abilities can do in a genuine Bismuth environment. They travel through more than twenty worlds by portal, moving from the Nexus toward the inner worlds. Their destination is deliberately chosen as a step short of those inner regions, which remain off-limits for the moment because Azoths are known to frequent them. The sisters want to reach Bismuth themselves, acquire the artifacts that can alter their status, and only then attempt the more dangerous territory.
Cato’s intervention changes the expedition’s balance before the fight begins. He has given Raine and Leese abilities that ordinary Skills cannot reproduce, making a dungeon they could not previously have approached with confidence a plausible target. Their equipment also compounds the advantage: although they still cannot project power in the manner of a true Bismuth, the accumulated benefits of gear obtained over a long period give them far greater potency than a Platinum should normally possess.
Combat and Skill Transformation
Raine’s enhanced perception lets her read motion as predictive information. By observing how people move, where attention is directed, the smallest facial or muscular changes, and even the movement of wind, she can assemble several seconds of probable future action. The ability does not overwhelm her with excess data or appear as a visual overlay; it operates as an immediate understanding of distance, force, and trajectory. In the dungeon, that perception turns apparently random attacks into readable patterns.
Her Whirling Inferno Flash allows her to evade jagged branches of dark lightning before they form. After watching only a few forks, she can anticipate their paths and dance through the gaps. Leese’s movement Skill develops in a parallel direction, letting her slide through space and around obstacles with a grace reminiscent of Arene and Onswa, whose mastery reflects decades or centuries of experience. Leese gains a comparable fluidity within minutes, while the improvement continues without disrupting her habitual movement or muscle memory.
The sisters’ advantages transform the dungeon’s central danger into an opportunity. Openings that would previously have required instantaneous reactions become visible nearly a full second in advance, an enormous interval in combat and an even greater one for Leese because her thoughts are accelerated beyond what a Platinum normally manages. Raine exploits every weakness with her obsidian and fire spear, while Leese moves through the attacks as though passing through a cold current. The swarm remains Bismuth-level, but the encounter becomes easy prey rather than an impossible battle.
Artifacts and Narrative Function
The sisters postpone replacing their Skills until after the fight. They need to determine which weaknesses remain and which abilities would best compensate for them, while Yaniss has supplied information about merging Skills into stronger movement and weapon abilities. Their plan is therefore not simply to survive Dungeon of the Abyssal Horde: it is to use the dungeon as a diagnostic trial before rebuilding their capabilities. With Cato’s gifts and knowledge associated with Bismuth advancement, they may be able to achieve S-Tier Skills while still at Bismuth, or even before reaching it.
The dungeon consequently occupies the structure of a threshold ordeal, but with an important reversal. It is designed by the narrative as a place where ordinary Platinum assumptions should fail, yet Raine and Leese arrive with advantages that let them read, evade, and dismantle its threats. Their decision to proceed toward the artifacts after clearing the creatures marks the dungeon’s decisive outcome: the place does not break them or delay them. Instead, it confirms that their altered abilities and accumulated equipment have moved them beyond the normal limits of their rank, preparing them for the next stage of ascension.
