Halghur Town

Systema Delenda Est

Halghur Town is the settlement nearest Arene Flamewing’s remote estate, and its importance emerges during the attempt to lure Grand Paladin Nikhil away from populated areas. The town is not merely a waypoint: it is the last inhabited space Raine and Leese Talis cross before entering the wilderness, and its surrounding geography makes the estate a usable site for Cato’s weapon and for a confrontation that must be hidden from powerful System senses.

Setting and Strategic Position

Halghur Town lies in a hot, dry region whose scrubby near-desert separates the settlement from Arene Flamewing’s compound. The distance between town and estate is about twenty miles, far enough to provide isolation but close enough for Raine and Leese Talis to reach the compound in roughly half an hour with augmented bodies and movement Skills. This combination of proximity and remoteness gives Halghur Town a distinct strategic value: it is connected to ordinary settlement life while opening directly onto wilderness.

Arene Flamewing’s estate is described as being far enough from a town to permit Cato’s weapon to be used. The town therefore marks the edge of the plan’s operational zone. Raine and Leese Talis emerge from a Nexus into the hot evening, sprint through Halghur Town, and then leave the streets for the scrub beyond. The route transforms a familiar settlement into the entrance to a controlled military space.

The Bait Operation

The town becomes part of a plan designed to draw Grand Paladin Nikhil toward a target that would not immediately reveal itself as a trap. Nikhil’s Bismuth-rank senses could detect the suspicious emptiness of a conveniently isolated area, but Arene Flamewing’s estate defenses could conceal whether she was actually present. That concealment made the compound the only practical lure the conspirators could devise while Raine and Leese Talis remained Coppers.

The operation required the estate’s refugees to be evacuated quickly before Nikhil arrived. Raine and Leese Talis crossed Halghur Town and the wilderness at speed, carrying movement Skills that let them outrun the Copper-ranked wildlife. The urgency was not limited to the planned confrontation. Nikhil’s presence had revoked the protective aegis normally supplied by Sydea’s Platinums, while the inability to leave had produced violence in the cities. A single high-ranker was creating more chaos and death than Cato had ever caused, so the route from Halghur Town to the estate unfolded under pressure from a wider social emergency.

At the estate walls, Raine and Leese Talis used Skating Steps to slide along the stone and reach the large courtyard doors. The defenses were active even though the doors stood open, visible through faint tracery of light. Arene Flamewing appeared within in a burst of fire, wrapped her whip around groups of refugees, and vanished again as she helped clear the compound. Halghur Town is consequently linked to an evacuation as much as to an ambush: those leaving the settlement’s vicinity are being moved away from the place where Nikhil is expected to arrive.

From Settlement to Crisis Zone

The planned confrontation turns the area around Halghur Town into a temporary crisis zone. Arene Flamewing accepts the use of her home as bait despite Raine’s doubt that she would welcome the arrangement, while Raine and Leese Talis move through the town and its outskirts as lower-ranked participants in a struggle dominated by a Bismuth. The ordinary hierarchy of settlement safety has broken down: streets are exposed to violence, protective powers have been withdrawn, and the estate’s defenses must substitute for the absent security of Sydea’s Platinums.

The town’s narrative function lies in this contrast. It is an inhabited place, but the characters pass through it as quickly as possible, using it only as the last cover before the wilderness and the estate. Its presence makes the estate’s isolation meaningful; without Halghur Town, the distance, the refugee population, and the danger spreading outward from Nikhil would lack a concrete geographic frame. The town is the threshold where planned resistance leaves the conditions of ordinary life and enters a confrontation governed by rank, concealment, and force.
