Personal Domain

Systema Delenda Est

Personal Domain is the mobile form of an Estate: a private residence detached from any single world. It first becomes available when Raine’s Housing Token is upgraded after her Bismuth ascension, giving her and Leese a practical refuge for a period in which they expect to remain constantly on the move. The domain is more than expanded storage. It is a portable piece of territory, a shelter, a logistical base, and a material expression of the sisters’ transition from ordinary dependence to autonomous existence.

Creation and Function

The Personal Domain option appears when the Housing Token is upgraded from an ordinary estate token. Raine can still establish a conventional estate on any world, but the new choice creates a smaller domicile unmoored from location. That distinction is decisive: the sisters no longer need to choose one world as a permanent home, and their dwelling can accompany a campaign that crosses worlds and political boundaries. Raine immediately recognizes the option as suited to the pair’s uncertain future, since they will have no fixed abode for a very long time.

The domain is entered through a conjured arch of fire. Beyond it lies a blank circle of earth enclosed by a white dome, and the System then presents the owner with choices about buildings, their placement, grass, trees, and sky. The space therefore begins as an empty, programmable territory rather than a finished house. Its owner supplies the domestic form through selections made by will, turning habitation into a direct extension of System power.

Raine and Leese’s Mobile Estate

Leese establishes her mobile estate before Raine does. Her version retains the same building and plot of land that a normal estate would possess, but relocates them inside an opaque dome. The entrance can be conjured or dismissed at will, allowing the estate to vanish from ordinary access while remaining available to its owner. The enclosure can hold months or years of supplies and large stocks of Cato-spears, making the domain valuable as a supply depot as well as a home.

The sisters’ Bismuth status changes the meaning of those supplies. Neither Raine nor Leese needs food or drink merely to remain alive anymore, so provisions are largely matters of enjoyment unless substantial healing is required. Their domains consequently support a post-mortal mode of life: they preserve comforts and equipment without reproducing the biological necessities that once made settlement unavoidable. Cato’s care packages become especially useful because they can be stored in quantities far beyond the capacity of their former estates, even while the sisters themselves remain effectively self-sustaining.

After Raine and Leese reach a clear island in the middle of the ocean, Raine invokes her Estate Token and selects the Personal Domain option. The new space settles around her like an additional Skill. She chooses a relatively simple open villa, with more windows than walls, a brilliant summer sky, grass, and enough room for dozens or even hundreds of the large packages Cato intends to drop from orbit. The result is functional, spacious, and visually pleasant, but Raine still feels dissatisfied by it, suggesting that portability and abundance do not automatically create the emotional certainty associated with home.

Dyen’s Estate as Counterpart

Dyen also uses a portable Estate while fleeing pursuit by Tornok Clan elites through the inner worlds. After crossing a dozen worlds and suppressing every trace of his presence, he opens a passage into his private space and slips inside, leaving only a finger of shadow connected to the outside. The estate’s profile is even smaller than Dyen’s own, so a pursuer searching for his essence cannot easily detect it.

His domain is the opposite of Raine’s open villa. It is simple, cramped in purpose, and almost entirely devoted to storage, with only a small, spare living area. At Bismuth Rank Dyen has no need to eat, drink, or sleep, and he sees little reason to waste space on domestic comforts. Shelves, racks, and chests hold niche-use artifacts and single-use crystals, acquired either from his kills or through purchases from the System. The estate is therefore shaped by evasion and preparation rather than sociability or display.

Dyen’s crystals are imperfect tools: many have contradictory effects, while some make it difficult to perform anything beyond one narrowly defined task. Depending on them instead of mastering Skills can be fatal, but they remain useful in exceptional circumstances, especially when a higher-rank agent is pursuing him or when he must follow traces days old. Inside the portable estate, he changes from his normal equipment to a lighter loadout built for movement and stealth, turning the domain into a concealed staging area for continued flight rather than a place of rest.

Meaning of Portable Territory

The Personal Domain alters the relationship between residence and geography. A conventional estate anchors its owner to a world, while a mobile domain makes privacy and material continuity portable. The owner can cross oceans, pass through portals, evade enemies, or move between System worlds without abandoning stored equipment and accumulated resources. In that sense, the domain gives physical form to a life organized around mobility rather than settlement.

Its customizable interface also recalls Cato’s station. Raine notices that both spaces permit changes to walls, windows, colors, and surroundings, even though Cato’s options are more limited. The resemblance makes her wonder how much Cato’s nature overlaps with the System’s, and whether more is moving through the heavens than Cato admits. The Personal Domain thus becomes evidence not only of System functionality but of a deeper structural similarity between Cato’s technology and the System’s own constructed spaces.

For Raine and Leese, the domain promises freedom from fixed habitation while preserving the possibility of comfort, abundance, and shared life. For Dyen, the same basic form becomes an almost invisible pocket of shadow packed with tools for survival. These contrasting uses reveal the object’s flexibility: it is neither inherently domestic nor militarized. Its meaning depends on what its owner needs to protect, carry, or become while moving through a world-spanning conflict.
