Punchy Bastards' Alum ascension
Systema Delenda EstPunchy Bastards' Alum ascension is the collective breakthrough of Raine Talis, Leese, and Lorraine through the System's highest demonstrated test of raw essence manipulation. Their victory is not merely another rank increase: it completes the progression from skill-based power to direct control over essence, integrates Raine's cornerstone ability more deeply into her being, and gives the three women a public standing high enough to invite contact with the vastly stronger Shiel-Ruyu.
The Final Ascension Trial
The Alum challenge is deliberately unlike the trials that preceded it. The Bismuth challenge tested Skills, while the Azoth challenge tested Domains; Alum tests the challengers' ability to manipulate essence directly. The arena is a small dungeon laid out as a grassy plain, where successive waves of monsters attack under a special restriction that makes Skills extremely difficult to use. The trial therefore strips away the normal convenience of the System's named abilities and asks what the participants can accomplish through controlled, sustained application of power.
Raine Talis enters the final arena facing a centipede at least fifty feet long. She compresses essence through her Domain and forces it into her spear, drives the weapon into the creature's head, and uses a twist of the weapon to shift a melee amplifier into an explosion deep inside the monster. She then moves laterally by a hundred feet with the aid of her combat brain. Actions that would normally have been effortless become difficult in the Alum arena, because the challenge is designed to expose the difference between possessing a Skill and understanding the essence from which its effects arise.
Cooperation and Combat Technology
Raine Talis and Leese fight beside Lorraine rather than attempting the challenge as isolated candidates. Leese uses frost, while Lorraine tears through the remaining oversized insects with flexible elemental manipulation. Lorraine has no combat brain, yet her instinctive command of raw essence is superior to that of both Sydeans. Cato's combat brains and the virtual intelligence installed within them compensate for the sisters' incomplete manual finesse: they can activate Skills, correct their movements, and extend the practical range of what the sisters understand how to do. In turn, the combat brains learn more from observing Lorraine's technique than from observing the monsters.
The trio's lack of defensive specialization would have endangered many parties, but their combined advantages prevent the final monster from landing a blow. When it shields its vulnerable point with one hand, the three fighters cooperate to sever the arm while their Domains suppress regeneration. They spend roughly half an hour striking the same location until they reach the creature's spine, after which the kill becomes straightforward. Raine Talis and Leese could have defeated the monster alone, but only over a much longer struggle; Lorraine converts that slog into a controlled engagement, while the sisters provide the sustained, focused combat Lorraine could not have maintained alone.
The final elite dissolves into essence that pours into the three victors as the quest completes. The arena announces its completion, confirms the Alum challenge, and begins ascension. This reward preserves the event's central logic: the challengers do not simply receive a badge for surviving a dungeon. The dungeon's defeated force becomes the substance of their elevation.
What Alum Changes
Essence floods into Raine Talis as the System elevates her to Alum. Unlike earlier elevations, the transformation does not provide new Skill slots. Instead, it raises all her existing Skills to the Alum level. The more consequential change is qualitative: Alum power lies in direct essence manipulation, beyond the limited menu of discrete Skills.
For Raine Talis, this makes Ascendant Steps of Khuroon part of her rather than a separate Skill. Her Bismuth cornerstone is fully integrated into her self, while her Domain can harness and direct essence with far greater ease. Leese undergoes the same development across the sisters' mental link, and the two of them begin feeling out a new equilibrium between the System's gifts and Cato's modifications: the instinct and essence control supplied by the Bismuth cornerstone must now work together with the combat brain and its virtual intelligence.
The elevation leaves them at the pinnacle of raw power so far established in their progression, although the combat brains still need testing and adjustment to the new level of control. The event thus closes one advancement cycle while opening another. Alum is a completed achievement, but it also creates a new technical problem: Cato's tools must learn how to support abilities that are no longer confined to the System's ordinary Skill structure.
Public Standing and New Possibilities
When the three emerge through the portal, Lorraine celebrates with an exuberant midair pirouette and an incoherent cry of "Ding!" Raine Talis and Leese laugh before following her into the Alum Arena, the designated place for Alum ascensions on each War-World. Their arrival is immediately measured against the wider community rather than treated as a private triumph.
Shiel-Ruyu announces that they have taken third place. He maintains a leaderboard for every member of the Punchy Bastards, adjusting completion times according to party size. The Punchy Bastard himself holds the solo record, while a normal party occupies second place. The trio's result is therefore remarkable twice over: they finish third within their guild despite facing the structural disadvantage of a group, and the performance places them among the top fifty Alum ascensions in the entire System across all recorded history.
That ranking changes the social temperature of the scene. Before Alum, Raine Talis, Leese, and Lorraine had considered recruiting Shiel-Ruyu but would not have dared to act on the thought. Even after reaching Alum, Shiel-Ruyu still thoroughly outclasses them. His open invitation nevertheless becomes imaginable because their achievement has demonstrated that they belong in the conversation. The ascension therefore functions as both a power milestone and a threshold of recognition: the three women do not surpass the Punchy Bastard, but they become strong enough for him to acknowledge them directly.
Narrative Significance
The event crystallizes the book's tension between System-shaped advancement and self-directed mastery. Elsewhere, Cato recognizes that quests reward killing with euphoric feedback and that quest objectives can exert a form of compulsion, making progress feel like the path of least resistance. Muar experiences the opposite condition when outside the System as a blank, purposeless void and concludes that the System provides direction, reward, and motivation. The Alum ascension embodies both sides of that conflict. Its quest structure channels the fighters toward a predetermined threshold, yet success depends on a form of understanding that exceeds ordinary System Skills.
The victory also gives cooperative effort a concrete advantage over solitary ranking. Raine Talis, Leese, and Lorraine each possess a different capacity: the sisters bring linked combat coordination and Cato's engineered support, while Lorraine supplies unmatched instinctive manipulation of essence. None of those strengths is sufficient in isolation, but together they make the final challenge manageable. Their third-place finish turns that interdependence into visible status, linking technical innovation, partnership, and advancement in a single public result.
Finally, the ascension is a concise example of the book's recurring upgrade rhythm: a restriction removes the familiar tools, a dangerous opponent exposes the gap between nominal power and actual mastery, an unusual ally supplies the missing capability, and the reward changes the terms of the next struggle. Raine Talis, Leese, and Lorraine leave not merely with a higher rank, but with a new relation to essence, a recorded place among the System's elite, and an invitation that could reshape the Punchy Bastards' future.
