Radio lizards
Systema Delenda EstRadio lizards are bioengineered communication organisms developed and deployed by Cato as part of the support infrastructure surrounding Raine and Leese. They are not merely convenient messengers: they extend Cato’s awareness across distance, let him coordinate movement and danger in real time, and embody his preference for distributed biological machinery over devices that might expose an actual biological computer to the System.
Design and Function
Radio lizards operate as living communication nodes. When Leese contacts Cato through one, his routing protocols identify both the channel and the location from which she is calling. The system is deliberately simple because Cato does not want to expose an actual biological computer to the System, yet it remains precise enough to distinguish where a transmission originates and which relay is carrying it. In this respect, the creatures function as sensors, transceivers, and safeguards at once.
Their value lies partly in their modesty. Cato recognizes that concentrating every capability in one easily crushed piece of meat would create an obvious vulnerability. When he begins planning additional sensory organisms for Raine and Leese, he considers attaching the new function to a radio lizard but immediately treats separation as the safer design. The radio lizard is therefore not an all-purpose biological tool, but one node in a larger network of specialized organisms.
Support for Raine and Leese
The radio lizards become essential when Raine and Leese are pursued by an Assassin’s Guild contract. After Leese reports that Dyen has revealed the existence of the bounty, Cato asks how the contract might be removed and says that he needs to back the sisters up again as soon as possible. The exchange shows that the lizards keep the sisters connected to Cato even while they are moving through hostile territory and that communication is integrated with his broader practices of backup, protection, and remote intervention.
During the pursuit, Raine uses the channel to ask Cato which nearby world can receive support after an entire group begins hunting them. The question is practical and immediate: the pursuers are Platinums capable of traveling between worlds, while Raine and Leese have no room in their builds for stealth Skills. The radio lizard gives the sisters a way to request assistance and redirect themselves before the hunters can close in. Their escape across four worlds is thus supported not only by portals and heightened senses, but by a relay that keeps Cato inside the tactical loop.
Secrecy and Distributed Perception
The creatures also protect information. When Raine explains to Dyen how she detected his stealthy presence, she attributes the warning simply to Cato rather than revealing that the sisters are using capelets or explaining how those devices work. The radio lizard helps preserve this asymmetry: Cato can supply the sisters with information without exposing the full architecture of their equipment to a temporary and only partially trusted ally.
Cato’s later interest in obtaining a radio lizard for himself confirms the creature’s practical importance. He has watched how effectively the relay supports the sisters and sees that the same arrangement could improve his own mobility and coordination. The desire is not sentimental; it reflects an understanding that a communication network becomes stronger as its nodes are distributed among the people and operations that depend on it.
Expansion of a Biological Network
Radio lizards belong to the same wider technological direction as Cato’s factories, Cato-beasts, warframes, and other engineered organisms. His production grows slowly at first, with drones excavating a lunar crater for volatiles and metals while a rudimentary solar array and manufactory operate under severe limits. Over time, however, the same patient accumulation becomes exponential: Lineages spread Cato’s influence across hundreds of worlds, each with factories, mines, refineries, energy collection, and locally produced weapons. Within that expanding infrastructure, a radio lizard is small, but its function is strategic because it connects otherwise separated operations.
The networked logic becomes especially important as Cato’s forces move across the frontier and eventually activate The Phage on a vast scale. Communications systems reach peak capacity as activity erupts across more than half a million worlds. The radio lizards are not presented as the sole mechanism behind that interworld coordination, but they prefigure its essential principle: survival depends on many local biological and technological nodes maintaining contact despite distance, surveillance, and System control.
Narrative Significance
The radio lizard marks a quiet reversal of the System’s model of centralized authority. The System orders worlds through portals, ranks, interfaces, deities, and controlled channels; Cato answers with organisms that carry information laterally, discreetly, and through bodies designed for particular tasks. Their significance is therefore larger than their physical scale. They make communication portable, hideable, and replaceable, while allowing Cato to remain present without exposing his core.
As a recurring device, the radio lizard also turns distance into a manageable tactical condition. Raine and Leese can cross portals, evade Dyen, seek support, and preserve secrets while still remaining connected to their patron and ally. The creatures do not eliminate danger, but they prevent separation from becoming isolation. In Cato’s war, that difference is decisive: a distributed network can keep acting even when individual bodies, worlds, or channels are threatened.
