Raine Talis–Lorraine

Systema Delenda Est

Raine Talis–Lorraine is a combat alliance formed through shared dungeon work and the recognition that compatible high-rankers can accomplish more together than either can accomplish alone. Lorraine’s unusual fighting style fits naturally beside Raine Talis and Leese, while her easygoing temperament, instinct for fairness, and irreverent humor make her a particularly attractive prospective ally. The relationship therefore begins not as intimacy or loyalty, but as a practical partnership that gradually opens toward recruitment and political cooperation.

Formation Through Combat

Lorraine first proves her value in the guardian arena of Heshk Mountains Dungeon, where Raine Talis and Leese fight alongside her against a towering crystal elemental guardian. Lorraine’s warning gives Raine time to shift several dozen miles away from a building-sized crystal lance, and her acidic attacks leave cracks that Raine and Leese exploit with fire and ice. Their combined assault strips enormous pieces from the elemental before its final explosion forces all three fighters to scatter. Lorraine’s effectiveness is not casual bravado: although she lacks the advantage of combat algorithms, her actions are driven by what Raine recognizes as wild savant talent.

Lorraine describes herself as a cadence fighter, a spellsword who cycles through different aspects of an unusual build to compound effects within her own attacks. That structure allows her to operate beside Raine Talis and Leese without simply copying their methods. Her Domain is flexible enough to match theirs, though it is not interlaced in the same way as Raine and Leese’s Domains. The distinction reflects the relationship itself: Raine and Leese possess a deep, established connection, while Lorraine is a compatible ally whose strengths remain distinct.

Compatibility and Trust

At Azoth, compatible Domains are not merely convenient. Conflicting personalities and incompatible approaches can cause members of a party to struggle against one another as much as against the dungeon’s enemies. Punchy Bastards is generally more compatible than the Azoth population at large, but Lorraine stands out even among them as easy to work with. Her addition lets Raine Talis and Leese attempt more difficult dungeons, and the Heshk Mountains Dungeon demonstrates the practical consequence: three complementary fighters can exploit openings that would be harder for the sisters alone to create.

The partnership also reveals itself in small decisions after the battle. When the guardian falls and leaves crystalline discs identified as crafting and upgrade materials, the three divide the reward into equal shares without discussion. Lorraine’s instinctive commitment to fairness surprises Raine, who is accustomed to seeing higher-rankers behave otherwise and suspects that Lorraine may have advanced largely through her own effectiveness. The ease of the division matters because it confirms that Lorraine is not only powerful but socially reliable within a cooperative party.

Lorraine’s own assessment of the expedition strengthens the bond. She contrasts competent teamwork with the crude method of merely throwing a larger fireball, and she praises the difference made by people who know how to fight. Her remark gives Raine and Leese a direct indication that Lorraine values tactical understanding rather than simple force. The alliance is consequently grounded in mutual competence: Lorraine respects their fighting ability, while they recognize that her flexibility and talent make her worth keeping close.

From Dungeon Partner to Prospective Recruit

After the dungeon is completed, Lorraine suggests getting lunch, and Raine Talis and Leese recognize the moment as an opportunity. They have been considering Lorraine as one of several possible recruits, but they are isolated and do not want a disagreement with her to become a fight in the open. Their decision to approach her there, while the three are still together and the atmosphere remains favorable, turns the combat alliance into the first stage of a recruitment effort.

Raine offers food from her Estate, and Lorraine’s immediate recognition of Cato’s mostaccioli breaks through any remaining formality. The scene makes the prospective alliance unusually personal without abandoning its strategic purpose. Lorraine is willing to discuss Cato’s position, although she initially misunderstands it as something involving a mass consciousness and reacts with disgust at the prospect. Leese responds by inviting her to speak with Cato directly rather than asking her to accept a secondhand explanation.

Lorraine’s condition for cooperation is comic but revealing: if Raine and Leese can obtain mint chocolate ice cream, she will let them take her anywhere. Her casual humor surprises the sisters because Cato is far away and most high-rankers behave more formally. Instead of suggesting betrayal to a World Deity, Lorraine’s manner reassures them that she can be approached as an independent-minded participant. Yet the sisters understand that convincing Lorraine is only an initial step; the larger objective is to build a coalition capable of persuading other high-rankers.

Narrative Significance

The Raine Talis–Lorraine alliance links personal combat chemistry to the broader political struggle surrounding Cato. Lorraine is not absorbed into Raine Talis and Leese’s partnership; her Domain remains separate, her cadence-fighter build retains its individuality, and her relaxed personality contrasts with the sisters’ tightly synchronized bond. What makes the relationship function is complementarity rather than sameness.

The alliance also shows how resistance is assembled in practice. It does not begin with a formal declaration or a grand military pact. It begins with a well-timed warning, coordinated attacks, an equal division of dungeon rewards, a shared meal, and an invitation to hear Cato’s position directly. Lorraine’s combat talent makes her useful, but her fairness and openness make her recruitable. Through her, Raine Talis and Leese gain not merely another fighter but a possible bridge to the wider high-ranker coalition they hope to create.
