Remote transmitter

Systema Delenda Est

The farcaster is a long-distance communications device used by the powerful figures trying to manage Sydea’s crisis. It enables messages and emergency coordination across dangerous distances, but its operation depends on charge and essence, resources that are becoming scarce as Sydea’s System destabilizes. The device therefore links private communication to planetary infrastructure: when administration weakens and outsiders flood the world, even the ability to speak across distance becomes costly and precarious.

Appearance and Operation

A farcaster is a physical device carried on the person and activated when a user receives or sends a transmission. Arene keeps hers at her side while operating amid the crisis around the System Nexus. When it vibrates, she checks its charge and uses a Platinum token against its front plate to replenish it before answering. The detail makes the farcaster materially present rather than an effortless magical interface. It must be carried, powered, and paid for, and its usefulness is constrained by the resources available on the world where it is being used.

The device appears to provide a communications function comparable to a telephone or mail system, but not direct all-purpose contact through the System itself. Cato observes that the highest-ranking Sydeans each possess a similar communications item and use the devices to coordinate their movements. Their reliance on equipment suggests that the System does not supply a direct messaging function, leaving communication dependent on separate instruments and whatever infrastructure supports them. Cato accordingly identifies System messaging as a possible weakness, although he postpones investigating it while trying to establish more favorable relations with the people of Sydea.

Use During the Sydea Crisis

Arene uses the farcaster while defending Sydea against foreign high-rankers competing for the rewards created by the System quest. After driving an opposing Platinum away from Mosaw City and back through the portal to Uriva, she receives a transmission from Karsa reporting that a Bismuth has entered Koish Town. The farcaster turns rapidly changing threats into information that can be acted upon, allowing Arene and Karsa to maintain awareness despite being separated across the planet.

Its operation is already becoming burdensome. Arene notes that the farcaster is ruinously expensive to operate because Sydea appears to be low on essence, even though foreign high-rankers continue arriving to exploit the crisis. The planet’s scarcity is therefore intensified by the very traffic that makes coordination necessary. With Onswa Ramik’s administrative access still restricted and Platinums occupied with emergencies throughout Sydea, Arene considers the device indispensable despite its nearly depleted charge. The farcaster embodies the contradiction of the crisis: the more urgent communication becomes, the less affordable the means of communication are.

Onswa Ramik also depends on communication to organize the remaining Platinum defenders. His hastily issued Emergency Quest receives answers from the other Platinums, and their responsiveness is described as one of the few positive developments in the recent months. Although that response is motivated largely by self-preservation, the farcaster-like communications network lets the scattered high-rankers react to the expanding threat. The device thus participates in the emergency administration of Sydea even as the formal privileges of the Planetary Administrator remain impaired.

A Tool of Witness and Coordination

The farcaster is not limited to private calls. When Arene confronts the strange being identified with Cato, its transmissions are already shaking and chiming at her side. She silences it, then sets it to transmit in case someone is listening, reasoning that a wider awareness of the situation is better than isolation. The device becomes a means of making an uncertain encounter publicly legible: Arene cannot predict the audience, but she deliberately keeps open a channel through which the truth of the confrontation might spread.

This use gives the farcaster a quasi-documentary role. Cato’s arrival, the worldwide quest, the impossible return of the Gosruk Guardians, and the revelation that Sydea is dying all exceed the ordinary categories available to Arene. By transmitting during the encounter, she refuses to let the knowledge remain confined to a single conversation. The device cannot solve the crisis, but it can preserve testimony and connect separate observers before the planetary situation becomes impossible to contain.

Limits and Narrative Significance

The farcaster’s importance comes from its limits. It cannot restore Onswa Ramik’s full administrative authority, halt the collapse of Sydea, or substitute for the missing control that the System once provided. It can only carry information, and even that function consumes scarce essence and stored charge. Its presence converts communication from an invisible narrative convenience into an infrastructural problem with a price.

The device also clarifies the difference between local organization and System-wide control. High-rankers can coordinate through their farcasters, but they cannot make the System itself directly answerable to them. Arene wishes she could lock down the portal used by the fleeing Platinum, yet communication and observation do not amount to authority. Cato recognizes the same gap from another angle: the existence of mail- and telephone-equivalent devices reveals that the System’s apparent totality contains seams, omissions, and vulnerabilities.

In this sense, the farcaster is a small but revealing object within the larger struggle between Cato and the System. It belongs to the practical world of cables, charge, essence, messages, and delayed responses rather than to the abstract promise of divine administration. As Sydea’s population shrinks, towns disappear, wilderness advances, and outsiders consume the planet’s reserves, the device’s dwindling power mirrors the world’s diminishing capacity to remain connected. The farcaster does not cause the collapse, but it makes the collapse measurable: every warning, unanswered possibility, and costly transmission shows how much infrastructure is required to keep a failing reality in contact with itself.
