Spiral Outpost South
Systema Delenda EstSpiral Outpost South is a contested frontier installation built around access to the Spiral Depths. Its decisive importance lies not in its size or population, but in the way its capture converts a precarious ambush position into a recognized, factionless base: Raine and Leese gain the right to resurrect there, receive a Feat of Glory, and obtain control of the dungeon connected to it.
Setting and Function
Spiral Outpost South is presented as an outpost rather than an ordinary settlement. Its most important structure is a central pylon within a fortified interior, together with a teleportation pylon that links the site to other destinations. The outpost is associated with the Spiral Depths, making it both a military position and a gateway to a dungeon whose importance extends beyond the immediate cavern or fortress.
The surrounding population is highly unstable. Over two weeks, the number of people present fluctuates between five and none, with one brief increase to eight when a party emerges from the dungeon. That rhythm reflects the outpost’s function: people arrive to wait, enter the dungeon, or defend access to it, rather than forming a permanent civic community. A loud argument from inside the outpost even echoes through the cavern, emphasizing that the place is occupied intermittently and without much concealment.
Contested Capture
Raine, Leese, and Dyen study the outpost before acting, balancing attack, distraction, and the possibility of diplomacy. They understand that their Bismuth rank may cause opponents to underestimate them, but they also know that defeating Azoths could make other factions hesitate long enough for them to secure the position. Dyen is the most difficult tactical factor because his abilities are designed for solitary stealth attacks, while Raine and Leese have developed a tightly coordinated partnership intended primarily for fighting together.
They wait until the outpost is empty, or nearly so, and rely on Dyen’s Domain to conceal their presence while keeping their own Domains close and controlled. Dyen infiltrates first to test for hidden protections. Once no catastrophic defense is triggered, Raine and Leese follow, sending fire and frost through narrow gaps in the fortress wards. Their senses immediately map the interior, and they move toward the Nexus, where the capture mechanism is located.
The outpost’s recorded status identifies it as belonging to the Three Gods Faction. Raine and Leese place their hands against the central pylon and accept the prompt to begin the claiming process. The pylon changes from white to red and pulses like a heartbeat while the System announces that Spiral Outpost South is being contested by No Faction. The announcement potentially reaches the faction that previously controlled the site, turning the capture into an open challenge rather than a silent occupation.
Defense and Control
The defenders initially send only three opponents. Raine is surprised that the response is not a full party, but the limited numbers give the attackers an immediate advantage. Enma mocks Raine and Leese for being merely Bismuths, while Moma Letep is identified as an Azoth and Tok-Tok Syph as a Peak Bismuth. The defenders attempt to suppress the sisters’ interlocked Domains, but Raine and Leese hold their ground with their spears ready and their overlapping powers working as a unified defense.
Dyen repeatedly disappears into concealment, leaving Raine and Leese to guard the pylon while he watches the approaches. The arrangement is effective but uneasy. They do not fully trust Dyen, whose hard, brittle manner and solitary methods make him difficult to read, even though nothing proves that he is immediately treacherous. The outpost therefore becomes a test not only of force but of temporary cooperation among three people whose motives and methods do not naturally align.
The first defending trio is defeated, and two more groups of three Azoths arrive through the teleportation pylon. Each is beaten by Raine, Leese, and Dyen. The repeated three-person attacks suggest that contest rules may restrict the number of defenders who can enter, preventing a faction from overwhelming the site with hundreds of high-rank combatants. A High Azoth appears once, assesses the situation, and leaves almost immediately, apparently choosing observation over engagement. The countdown continues while the defenders fail to assemble a larger response.
Rewards and Narrative Significance
When the timer reaches zero, the System declares that Raine, Leese, and Dyen control Spiral Outpost South. The faction designation becomes None, marking the outpost as factionless rather than transferring it to another established power. The capture grants one earned resurrection and permits the three victors to return from death at the site. It also awards a Feat of Glory specifically for seizing an outpost as factionless individuals.
The sisters are startled by the resurrection provision, since the rule implies that control of a strategic location can provide high-rank people with a form of guaranteed return. The reward changes the outpost from a temporary tactical objective into a durable military asset. Its value lies in continuity: the victors can die and still reappear there, while the factionless status gives them an independent foothold outside the established political structure.
The final System notice confirms that the controlled dungeon is the Spiral Depths. Thus the capture binds three benefits together: territorial control, resurrection access, and authority over a dungeon. Spiral Outpost South becomes an example of how the System turns places into instruments of power. A sparsely occupied frontier station can function simultaneously as a battlefield, a transit node, a source of glory, and an anchor for future operations.
Its broader significance comes from the contrast between the outpost’s apparent weakness and its strategic consequences. The site is quiet enough for three intruders to observe it for weeks, yet important enough to trigger repeated Azoth responses once contested. The victory also demonstrates that rank alone does not settle every conflict. Raine and Leese’s coordinated Domains, Dyen’s concealment, timing, and the restrictions governing contested outposts allow a small, factionless force to defeat stronger opponents and take control of a location tied to the Spiral Depths.
