Maya Falls into a Spiderweb and Is Rescued by Bobbie
The Adventures of Maya the BeeMaya Falls into a Spiderweb and Is Rescued by Bobbie is an episode in which a garden excursion turns into a struggle for survival, and Bobbie’s practical intervention restores Maya’s freedom. The event moves from the gradual discovery that she is trapped, through Thekla’s false offer of help, to a rescue that leaves Maya able to fly and continue her journey home.
The Trap and Recognition
Maya is flying through blackberry vines whose green berries are forming even as the vines blossom. She is trying to reach the jasmine, whose flowers and scent have drawn her onward. Something catches across her forehead, shoulders, and wings. At first she cannot identify what is restraining her: the soft, yielding threads hold her suspended, and she can rock in place, but cannot fly free. There is no immediate pain, only the strange loss of movement and the growing sense that something is wrong.
The trap becomes clear when Maya notices a fine, silvery thread across her breast and finds that it sticks to her. More threads cross her shoulders and bind her wings together. Once she recognizes that she has been caught in a spiderweb, the garden’s ordinary activity contrasts with her helplessness: sunlight falls among the leaves, insects and birds continue moving nearby, and the jasmine she meant to reach is close at hand. Yet her family at home knows nothing of what has happened, so she cannot expect an immediate rescue from them.
Maya struggles desperately, snapping one of the heavier supporting threads, but learns that further movement only makes the web more effective at holding her. Exhausted, she stops fighting. Under a blackberry leaf she then sees Thekla crouched close by, watching her. The sight makes the danger unmistakable: Maya is no longer dealing with an unseen obstruction but with a predator waiting beside the web.
Thekla’s Offer and Maya’s Peril
Maya’s fear turns to anger. She gives a battle cry, but it does not change her position in the web. When Thekla approaches, Maya asks for help getting free. Thekla replies that she has come to help and says that Maya should keep still so the web can be repaired. The offer sounds like a promise of release, but Thekla’s actions and stated intentions expose its deception.
Thekla identifies herself as a member of the Cross spiders and explains that Maya will be kept in the shade rather than left exposed to the sun. She also says that a hanging captive can serve as a lure for other creatures. Her explanation makes clear that she does not intend to release Maya: she plans to leave her suspended until she dies of starvation. The danger is therefore not simply that Maya is caught; it is that Thekla has control of the web and intends to use that control to keep her there.
As Maya weakens, help comes from below. She hears someone growling and recognizes Bobbie, the dung-beetle. She asks whether he can tear the threads. Bobbie answers confidently that he can do more than break a few strands, but his rescue depends on a different action from the one Maya has requested. Rather than trying to tear apart the web around her, he climbs onto a leaf, grasps the thread from which she is hanging, and lets go of the leaf. The supporting thread breaks, and both Bobbie and Maya fall to the ground.
Bobbie’s Rescue
The fall changes Maya’s predicament: she is no longer suspended in Thekla’s web, but the threads still wrap her legs and wings. Bobbie begins unwrapping her, while Maya is too shaken to speak. He tells her to try flying once he has freed her enough to do so. Thekla watches from a withered leaf. Though she looks at Bobbie with hostility, she turns away rather than attack him; her fangs and stings are ineffective against his armor.
Bobbie finishes tearing the web away from Maya’s legs and wings, leaving her to complete the remaining grooming herself. She proceeds cautiously, still weak from fright. When she lifts into the air, her wings work properly, and she discovers that she has not been injured. The rescue has thus restored more than her position on the ground: it has returned the ability that the web had taken from her, flight.
Return to Flight and Aftermath
Maya first flies slowly to the jasmine she had been trying to reach. There she drinks its abundant nectar, turning the flower that had remained just beyond her grasp into the first destination of her renewed freedom. She then returns to Bobbie in the grass and thanks him with deep emotion. Her gratitude follows the concrete measure of what he has done: after believing that she would not escape, she can fly again and choose where to go.
Bobbie accepts the thanks, describes helping others as characteristic of him, and advises Maya to go home early and rest. She says that home is only a short distance away, at the edge of the beech woods, and tells Bobbie she will never forget him. The episode ends with Maya free to leave the garden and return toward home, while Thekla remains nearby, hidden in a leaf and watching her web. The rescue resolves Maya’s immediate danger without removing the spider or undoing the threat posed by the web; its decisive change is that Bobbie’s intervention gives Maya back her movement and lets her continue her journey.
