Darktan leads the Clan’s assault on the rat king’s controlled rats
The Amazing Maurice and His Educated RodentsDarktan leads the Clan’s assault on the rat king’s controlled rats in a scene that turns collective fear into coordinated action. The fighting lasts only seconds, but its decisive change is larger than the defeat of the rats in the room: the Clan acts not as a frightened mass, but as a community able to think, hold formation, and pursue a shared objective.
Causes and preparation
The assault takes place amid a crisis in which fear has already begun to undo the rats’ ability to act together. Earlier, rats ran past Peaches and Dangerous Beans in such panic that one squealed, gibbered, and seemed to have forgotten how to talk. Against that breakdown, Darktan’s rallying words define the Clan by the capacities panic threatens: its members have brains, can think, and need not turn and run. He places the danger within the image of the Dark Wood from the Book, where something terrible hides behind fear, and invokes the Bone Rat as a figure who passes by those who face him rather than falter. The speech does not remove the danger; it gives the squad a shared way to meet it.
That appeal builds on a collective identity the rats had already articulated around fire. Dangerous Beans had argued that controlling a flame made a statement to the darkness: the rats were separate, not merely rats, but the Clan. In the cellar, Darktan gives that distinction an immediate practical test. His description of the squad as thinking rats who do not run from darkness, fire, noises, traps, or poison turns identity into an expectation of conduct. The pressure is plain: he knows the young rats are worried, and the squad is nearly cowering, yet he tells them that the strength they need is already present in them.
Finding the way to the fight
The route to the confrontation is marked by the smell of matches. In the dank cellars, the sharp sulphur scent travels through drafts and cracks; Sardines recognizes it and alerts Darktan. Sardines also warns that the way leads through the room of cages. The scent gives the Clan a direction through the underground rooms, while the warning establishes that the approach runs through an area associated with confinement. Darktan responds with an order to head toward the smell.
As the action reaches the room, Keith recognizes the arrival of the Clan. The new arrivals move differently from the rats they confront: they stay together, spread into a line, and advance slowly. This formation is the visible answer to the panic Darktan has been trying to counter. The Clan does not simply rush at the enemy as a mass; it moves as a group whose members maintain their positions and can respond together when attacked.
The assault
When an enemy rat attacks the advancing line, the Clan closes around it quickly, like a fist. When the formation opens again, the attacker is dead. The pattern makes each assault a coordinated exchange: the line absorbs the attack, closes over the enemy, and resumes its advance. The scene gives tactical form to the idea that the Clan’s members can think and act together, rather than merely sharing fear.
The balance shifts when the surviving enemy rats smell the terror of their fellows and try to escape. The Clan’s line then breaks into pairs, which hunt down the fleeing rats one by one and bring them down with a bite. The change in formation is responsive rather than chaotic: the line is suited to meeting attackers, while pairs pursue those who scatter. The panic that had made other rats gibber and run now works against the enemy, spreading through its ranks and turning flight into the opening the Clan needs.
The fighting is over seconds after it begins. A few lucky rats escape into the walls, their squeaks fading away, while the Clan gives a ragged cheer of relief at still being alive. The contrast with the abandoned idea that a bunch of rats is only a large animal with many legs and no brain is sharp. Here, collective action does not erase individual capacity: the Clan’s shared movement depends on purposeful coordination, and its members change tactics as the opponents’ fear changes the situation.
Aftermath and significance
Keith asks Darktan what happened to him, but Darktan does not stop to explain. He points to the door at the other end of the cellar and orders Keith to open it if he wants to help. Then he darts into a drain, with the rest of the squad pouring in after him; one rat tap-dances as he goes. The direction of the action matters: victory in the room is a brief interruption, not the squad’s final objective. Darktan immediately turns the surviving Clan toward what lies beyond the door and down the drain.
Darktan’s command also carries the cost of the danger into the aftermath. During the rally, the rats see the livid wound across his chest, which is healing badly and will leave a permanent scar. He has used the sight of his own vulnerability while persuading them to face death, and then, once the fight ends, leads the squad onward rather than withdrawing from the danger. The assault therefore joins leadership to example: Darktan’s words establish the Clan’s identity, but its credibility is tested in formation, in the violence of the encounter, and in the decision to keep moving when the immediate battle is over.
