This is not a story; this is real

The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents

“This is not a story; this is real” is the expression Keith uses to demand that Malicia face danger as an immediate fact rather than as a scene governed by reassuring story conventions. Repeated as an argument between them, it becomes more than a warning: it marks their conflict over whether stories protect people from reality or help them act within it.

A warning against storybook safety

Keith first insists that the frightened rats around them are living through a real crisis, not performing roles in a story. Later, speaking to Malicia while they are tied up, he patiently explains that real life offers no magical guarantee that danger will be softened or that rescue will arrive conveniently. The repeated distinction between story and reality is practical: he wants Malicia to recognize the stakes of their situation and stop relying on the expectations of a fictional adventure.

Malicia’s answer: make a story

Malicia does not simply accept Keith’s distinction. She explains that her famous storyteller relatives, Agoniza and Eviscera Grim, are part of her background, and she argues that a person who does not turn life into a story risks becoming a minor figure in someone else’s. When Keith questions what happens if the story fails, she answers that it can be changed until it works. For her, story-making is not a promise that events will follow a safe script; it is a way to claim agency and revise one’s course.

Conflict and shared stakes

Their exchange sets two different uses of stories against each other. Keith rejects the fantasy that narrative conventions will keep people safe, while Malicia treats narrative as something people can actively reshape. Her criticism that Keith lets a cat make his decisions turns the disagreement toward his own passivity: refusing comforting stories is not, by itself, the same as taking charge. The expression therefore captures both the danger of mistaking fiction for protection and the unresolved question of how a person can act when reality does not follow a reassuring plot.
