Andy Warhol—Bob Colacello

The Andy Warhol Diaries

Andy Warhol and Bob Colacello’s relationship appears in the diaries as both a working connection and a familiar presence in shared social circles. Two recorded encounters show Colacello reflecting on what he learned at Interview, while Warhol follows his writing and notes his behavior at a party.

Editorial Work and Influence

At a party in October 1986, Warhol mentioned having read Colacello’s article about Bianca in the new Vanity Fair. He singled out its photographs of her walking with children in the fields, showing that he kept up with Colacello’s writing beyond the magazine they had worked on together.

At a later gathering, Colacello spoke appreciatively about his time at Interview. He told Warhol that the training he received there had done a great deal for his writing. The exchange records Colacello’s own account of the magazine’s professional influence, and Warhol’s presence as someone to whom he could explain that debt.

Social Encounters and Personal Observation

The first encounter took place at The Carlyle Hotel, where Warhol and Colacello were both present after a party. Colacello’s appearance in that social setting alongside Warhol’s attention to his published work suggests how the magazine’s professional ties extended into their shared social life.

At the later party at Liza Minnelli’s apartment on East 69th Street, Warhol found Colacello especially kind. He also noticed Colacello’s familiar breath after drinking and inferred that he had begun drinking again, describing the smell through an image of fermenting champagne. The observation is personal and pointed, but remains Warhol’s impression rather than confirmation of Colacello’s drinking. Together, the entries present a relationship sustained by professional regard and recurring social contact, without documenting a rupture or a decisive change.
