Hotel Danieli

The Andy Warhol Diaries

Hotel Danieli appears in the diary as a temporary base during a Venice visit shaped by travel, art-world appointments, and uncertainty over an exhibition shipment. The entry places the hotel within a tightly observed itinerary rather than describing it as a destination in its own right.

Arrival and Lodging

On September 12, 1977, Andy Warhol and his party flew from Paris to Venice on Air France, a two-hour trip, then took a boat taxi to Hotel Danieli for $20. After checking in, they went to La Colomba for lunch, which cost $25. The next morning, they left for another hotel, whose room had a balcony and which Warhol preferred. The diary thus records Hotel Danieli as a short stay, not their lodging for the whole Venice visit.

Exhibition Plans and Delays

The stay coincided with preparations for an exhibition scheduled to open on Friday. Autillo Codognato was working on the show with Doug Christmas, but the paintings remained in customs in Rome. At lunch the following day, hosted by Codognato at Harry’s Bar, he and Christmas discussed the customs problem and planned to contact the ambassador in Rome to hasten the shipment. The hotel episode sits beside this practical obstacle: the visit had reached Venice, but the works needed for the show had not.

A Stop in the Travel Diary

The account gives Hotel Danieli a precise place in the journey through its transport cost, check-in, and departure the next morning. Around that brief stay, the diary notes lunch at La Colomba, a visit to Codognato’s jewelry shop, an encounter with Nan Kempner, and Graham Sutherland signing prints while they were on the launch. Together, these details frame the hotel as one element in a passing Venetian itinerary, with the exhibition’s delayed paintings providing its clearest continuing concern.
