Minskoff Theatre

The Andy Warhol Diaries

Minskoff Theatre enters the diary through a brief sequence that connects a performance, an intimate backstage encounter with John Curry, and the delivery of a painting. The account gives the theater a practical presence as well as a social one: its new, air-conditioned dressing rooms become the setting for a visit after the show, while the next day it serves as the destination for a work of art.

The Ice Ballet and Backstage Visit

On January 5, 1979, Bianca Jagger had tickets for John Curry’s ice ballet at Minskoff Theatre. After the performance, the diary’s narrator, Bianca, and Jade went backstage to see Curry. The dressing rooms are noted as new and beautiful, with air conditioning—specific comforts that distinguish this behind-the-scenes space from the performance itself. The visit turns personal when Curry kisses the narrator on the mouth as the narrator is leaving. That moment sits alongside concern about the show’s future: Curry had badly injured himself, and the production was being considered for closure, though it was scheduled to run for one more week.

A Painting Delivered to the Theater

The theater remained part of the diary’s business the following day. Walter Steding called to ask about freelance work, and the narrator arranged for him to deliver a Shadows painting to John Curry there. The entry records the delivery’s practical detail as well as its destination: the cab cost ten dollars. In this account, Minskoff Theatre links the public event of the ice ballet to the personal visit and the circulation of the narrator’s artwork.
