Shea Stadium
The Andy Warhol DiariesShea Stadium appears in the diary as the destination of an April 26, 1978 outing to see the New York Mets. Rather than recounting the game itself, the entry preserves the trip’s small particulars: the cold, the borrowed coat, the ride with Fred Hughes and Averil, and a score that remained 0–0 when the party left.
The outing
The office closed early so the diarist and Fred Hughes could go to Fred’s place and wait for Averil to collect them. The diarist gave Fred $4 and noted the expense of cabbing up to 89th Street. From there, Averil drove them out to Shea Stadium in her mother’s mini-Cadillac; the diarist described her as a fast driver.
At the stadium
The cold became part of the account: Fred had given the diarist a winter coat, which was much needed. The entry records no play-by-play or final result. Instead, it marks the group’s departure at the end of the eighth inning, when the game was 0–0, and notes that the radio still reported the same score on the way in. The trip’s toll was 75 cents.
What the diary records
Shea Stadium is shown here through the logistics surrounding a visit rather than through a description of the ballpark or the game. The early office closing, the ride in Averil’s mother’s car, the freezing weather, and the unchanged score give the outing its shape; the diary leaves the game’s eventual outcome unstated.
