The Four Seasons

The Andy Warhol Diaries

The Four Seasons are represented in the diary by a farewell concert that links the group’s present to the diarist’s memories of its earlier career. The account centers not on the band’s music or lineup, but on its acknowledgment of original producer Bob Crewe and the personal history that acknowledgment reopened.

The group and its earlier connection

The diarist recalls knowing The Four Seasons in the 1960s through Bob Crewe, whom the group thanked at the concert as its original producer. That recognition gives the brief episode a backward reach: the farewell is also a reminder of the people and professional associations through which the diarist first encountered the group.

The farewell concert

On October 7, 1977, the diarist attended The Four Seasons’ goodbye concert at Radio City Music Hall. Afterward, Frankie Valli came over to say hello. The diarist had given a concert program to be autographed by Valli, and their exchange soon turned from the performance to Bob Crewe’s condition: Valli said Crewe had been hit by a car in California, might lose a leg, and was very low, and suggested that the diarist call him.

Bob Crewe and the diarist’s impression

Valli’s account made Crewe’s injury part of the concert’s afterlife, carrying the farewell occasion into a report of serious trouble elsewhere. The diarist had expected Valli to be more visibly upset. Although Valli appeared concerned, the diarist judged that his reaction fell short of that expectation. The episode therefore records both the group’s public acknowledgment of Crewe and the diarist’s private reading of the concern expressed afterward.
