The Pierre
The Andy Warhol DiariesThe Pierre is a recurring New York setting in these diary entries, used for a restaurant meeting, a planned pickup, and the packing that precedes Bianca Jagger’s move. Its significance lies in these practical and social transitions: people meet there, depart from it, and carry on elsewhere.
A Meeting with Jodie Foster
On a beautiful November day, Catherine Guinness and the diarist went to The Pierre to meet Jodie Foster. They waited in the hotel restaurant until Foster arrived with her mother and a man whose relationship to her mother the diarist could not identify. After the meal, they walked to F.A.O. Schwarz, where Foster signed autographs; on the way back toward the hotel, a candy-cane seller gave one to Foster and one to the diarist. The Pierre anchors the encounter, but the outing quickly spills into the surrounding city.
A Planned Pickup
On another evening, Bianca Jagger invited the diarist to a screening of Silver Streak. The plan was to pick her up at The Pierre at seven, but the diarist did not get home until that hour. Bianca and Mick Jagger had recently rented a house on 72nd Street, though it was not yet ready for them to move into. From the hotel, the evening continued at Loews Tower East and then at La Grenouille. The Pierre thus appears as the intended meeting point during a period when the Jaggers’ living arrangements were still in transition.
Packing and Departure
On December 18, 1976, Bianca packed at The Pierre before taking her belongings to the house she shared with Mick. She packed until around midnight; at the new home, she turned off the alarm and they went inside. The house had recently been renovated, freshly painted, and furnished, and the diarist remarked that it must be costing them a fortune. Afterward, Bianca set the alarm and left for the airport to return to Montauk. In this sequence, The Pierre is not the destination but the place from which a temporary stay gives way to a new household.
