Denny Creek is the setting for a summer hike that shifts abruptly from family play to crisis. Its trail and the creek’s broad, slick rock slides give the Swift family a place to explore together, but the Slippery Slabs become the site of Eve’s fall and the emergency that follows.

Setting and Trail

The hike takes place in the Cascades on a pleasant summer day. Zoë clumps along in her first pair of waffle stompers, while Enzo is off leash. The path winds beneath cedars and alders, with compacted earth on the trail and softer ground among fallen needles off it. The creek, reached after hills, roots, and rock outcroppings, runs over broad, flat slabs, forming pools and streams fed by cold snowmelt.

Family Outing at the Slippery Slabs

At the creek, Zoë, Denny, and Eve play a repeated sliding game. Denny waits below in a pool while Eve sends Zoë down the water-slick rock toward him; he catches her and returns her to Eve to go again. The rocks provide traction when dry but become slick when wet. The game’s familiar repetition makes the sudden change all the more consequential: when Zoë pulls her toes from the icy water, Eve shifts to keep her safe, loses her footing, and falls.

Fall and Immediate Aftermath

After Eve falls and remains still, Denny quickly reaches her and Zoë. Later, with Enzo leading and herding Zoë, Denny guides Eve back along the trail. She is disoriented, and the group reaches a hospital in Bellevue in the early evening. Eve says she is okay, but she is dazed, slurs her words, and keeps nodding off while Denny tries to keep her awake and have her checked.

Narrative Significance

Denny Creek’s defining episode turns an ordinary family pastime into a point of danger without changing the place itself: the same wet slabs that make Zoë’s repeated game possible are difficult to cross safely. The scene also places Enzo within the family’s response, leading Zoë as Denny helps Eve. The creek thus marks a sharp change in the outing, from shared play to the urgent effort to get Eve medical care.
