Pacific Raceways

The Art of Racing in the Rain

Pacific Raceways serves both as a workplace for Denny and as a place where Enzo can observe his world of racing from the sidelines. During a period of financial strain and ongoing legal expenses, Denny teaches driving there to bring in additional income; on some teaching days, Enzo accompanies him, watching from the stands and exploring the paddock rather than riding in a car.

A Workplace Under Financial Pressure

Denny’s instruction at Pacific Raceways is one practical response to the cost of defending himself. He has to keep up with his lawyer’s account while giving a portion of his paycheck to the couple pursuing custody of Zoë. His employers allow him to change his schedule for legal meetings, and teaching at the track gives him a comparatively straightforward way to earn more toward his defense. The circuit is therefore not only a setting for racing but part of the work that helps him sustain his legal fight.

Enzo at the Track

When Denny brings Enzo along on teaching days, Enzo is not permitted to ride with him. Instead, he sits in the stands to watch Denny teach and trots through the paddock, where the cars offer a changing spectacle: a Lotus Exige, a classic Porsche, and a Lamborghini. Enzo becomes known as a track dog. His view of the venue is distinct from Denny’s professional role: he cannot join the driving, but he can follow its rhythms and inspect the cars at close range.

The Ferrari’s Arrival

At the end of July, during a hot day of instruction, a red Ferrari F430 drives through the paddock and stops at the school headquarters. Its older owner gets out, and Don Kitch, the school’s owner, greets him with an embrace. After they speak, the visitor walks to the bleachers to watch the track. Don then radios the corner workers to checker the session and bring the students in for lunch.

As the students return and instructors offer comments on their driving, Don calls Denny over. The unusual arrival has briefly interrupted the ordinary teaching schedule and drawn Denny into an encounter whose next steps are not established in this scene. Pacific Raceways thus brings together the practical routine of Denny’s paid work and the possibility of a consequential meeting, while Enzo watches from beside him.
