Sears Point

The Art of Racing in the Rain

Sears Point is the place Denny remembers as the setting of his first driving school, and of a lesson in which confusion about driving in the rain gave way to a memorable principle. The recollection links the location to the origin of a phrase Denny later shares with Eve.

Driving School in the Rain

At nineteen, Denny attended his first driving school at Sears Point. The instructors explained their secrets for driving in the rain, but their explanations left the students totally confused; they had no idea what the instructors meant. The remembered setting is defined less by a description of the track than by this failed lesson and the uncertainty it produced.

The Phrase Remembered There

Denny recalls turning to the fast French driver beside him, Gabriel Flouret, who smiled and said, “That which you manifest is before you.” Years later, Denny softly repeats the saying to Eve and recounts its origin at Sears Point. The place thus enters the narrative through memory: it anchors the moment when a fellow student’s words made sense of an otherwise bewildering lesson, and supplies the setting for the phrase Denny chooses to pass on.
