Washington Park Arboretum

The Art of Racing in the Rain

Washington Park Arboretum is the setting for a long walk Denny takes with Enzo in the days after Eve’s death. The route gives Enzo room to run and offers both companions a change from the stale air of the house, making the Arboretum a landscape of movement and brief relief within a period of mourning.

Setting and Route

Denny and Enzo walk north from Madison Valley into the Arboretum. After negotiating a dangerous stretch without a walkway, where traffic travels faster than feels safe, they turn onto a smaller road and Denny lets Enzo off the leash. The route continues beyond their usual turning point: they cross a pedestrian bridge, curve into Montlake, and later cross a larger road toward another park, Interlaken Park. That later destination is distinct from the Arboretum, though the walk connects the two.

The Walk After Eve’s Death

Eve has been dead only a few days. Denny has spent much of that time inside the house, and Enzo describes them both as needing a change. On this outing Denny wears dark slacks and a black trench coat over a high-necked cashmere sweater, rather than his usual casual clothes and yellow slicker. The change in clothing accompanies a departure from their familiar routine: instead of turning back where they usually do, Denny keeps walking.

The damp setting matters to Enzo as more than scenery. He relishes the drizzle and the smells it releases, and he races through long, wet grass with his nose close to the ground. The familiar pleasure recalls the fields of his childhood in Spangle, though that farm was dry. At the Arboretum, running becomes a bodily counterpoint to the stillness and grief of the days at home.

Narrative Significance

The Arboretum walk does not undo the loss that has altered Denny’s life. Its significance lies in the small reprieve it makes possible: a longer-than-usual route, a leash removed, and Enzo’s exuberant passage through wet grass. The walk briefly shifts the story’s focus from bereavement to shared movement through a living landscape, while the decision to keep going marks a modest departure from the habits of their former days.
