Kansas City Union Station

The Bad Seed

Kansas City Union Station is the place where Bessie Denker was apprehended after escaping a burning farmhouse in disguise. Her arrest there ended an effort to make Ada Gustafson appear responsible for the killings and to pass herself off as dead.

Setting and Role

The account locates Bessie’s capture in the waiting room of Kansas City Union Station. It gives no broader description of the station; its significance in the narrative is specific and consequential, as the public place where the authorities caught her the morning after the murders.

Bessie Denker’s Capture

Before fleeing, Bessie had dressed Ada in her own clothes, put her wedding ring on Ada’s finger, and set fire to the farmhouse, hoping officials would mistake Ada’s body for her own and attribute the crimes to Ada. Bessie escaped wearing her husband’s clothes and carrying a parcel containing Ada’s head. The disguise failed: the next morning, police found Bessie seated in the station waiting room with the parcel on her lap. When they opened it, its contents established that Ada was among the victims, and Bessie was taken into custody.

Narrative Significance

The station marks the reversal of Bessie’s attempted deception. The clothing and fire were meant to obscure who had committed the crimes and whether Bessie had survived; her presence at Kansas City Union Station, carrying evidence that connected her flight to Ada, brought that plan to an end. The location therefore serves as the point where escape gives way to capture.
