Mr. Barren

The Birthday Party

Mr. Barren is Charlie Hamilton’s teacher and a recent arrival in town whose encouragement of her writing makes him an important adult in her life. His brief appearance at Charlie’s birthday party also places him among the people investigators may need to question after she disappears, though the evidence presented does not establish wrongdoing on his part.

Identity and Teaching

Mr. Barren moved to town a few months before the events at the party to work at the school. He encourages Charlie’s creative writing, and she values his judgment: before the celebration, she asks whether she can read her story aloud to the guests, explaining that he considers it the best one she has written. The exchange establishes both his support for her work and Charlie’s eagerness to share it.

Relationship with Charlie

Charlie speaks about Mr. Barren so often that Mitch later tells investigators she never stops talking about him. At breakfast, Fay teases Charlie about the many stories she writes; Charlie replies that Fay is only annoyed because she named a smelly character after her. Against that playful family exchange, Mr. Barren’s praise offers Charlie encouragement from outside the household and helps explain why she is so keen to present her story at the party.

Presence at the Party and Investigation

At the party, Kathy sees Mr. Barren waving to a group of guests as he leaves. He takes a route around the side of the house rather than exiting through it, and he is gone before Kathy can ask when he last saw Charlie. The scene records his departure and Kathy’s lost chance to question him, but it does not explain why he chose that route or imply that he knew Charlie was missing.

Later, while investigators are examining Mitch’s account of his whereabouts, Mitch points out that Mr. Barren attended the party. He describes him as single and new to town, notes Charlie’s frequent talk about him, and asks whether police have questioned him. Chase replies that almost everyone has been questioned. Mr. Barren thus becomes part of the investigation’s field of inquiry because of his connection to Charlie and his presence at the gathering; the supplied evidence offers no further conclusion about him.
