Latimer Road
The Black-Eyed BlondeLatimer Road is the Pacific Palisades location where a man identified as Nico Peterson was struck by a vehicle on the night of April 19. The reported hit-and-run anchors the case’s apparent account of his death, but the road also becomes part of the larger uncertainty over whether the dead man was Peterson at all.
Setting and Circumstances
The coroner’s file places the collision on Latimer Road, in the County of Los Angeles, sometime between eleven o’clock at night and midnight. The driver was unknown. The report recorded that the victim wore Peterson’s clothes and carried Peterson’s wallet, while Floyd Hanson had identified the body. These details supported the initial identification but did not resolve the questions raised by the later investigation.
Connection to the Cahuilla Club
Latimer Road’s proximity to the Cahuilla Club shapes Marlowe’s inquiry into how the collision happened. He reasons that the road would not have been busy at that hour; Joe Green counters that it was a Saturday night and people came and went from the club. Their exchange offers a possible context for traffic on the road, not an identification of the driver or proof of how the collision occurred.
Role in the Disputed Identification
Clare Cavendish’s account makes the road more than the setting of a reported accident. She had been at the Cahuilla Club that night and saw Peterson, drunk and loud, escorted out by two of Floyd Hanson’s men. About an hour later, after the hat-check girl and her boyfriend announced that Peterson had been found dead beside the road, Clare went outside and saw the body being loaded into an ambulance. She nevertheless remained certain that she had seen Peterson alive on Market Street in San Francisco months after his supposed death. Latimer Road thus marks both the apparent confirmation of Peterson’s death and the beginning of a contradiction Marlowe cannot dismiss.
